Hi people, basically need a little help. I'm looking at getting an Audi A3 1.6 (don't ask), 1997-2001, Got a budget of £3000. They all appear to have very high milage for this price range, but I've found a nice sport example with 97,000 miles on the clock, FASH, good nick, loads of options, 2000 on an w reg. £2300. My question to you is should a high mileage exapmle like this be avoided like the black death? What can I expect to fail?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think high mileage is anything to be worried about. Most cars these days should be good for 150k miles without major expense. Just for reference, I bought a Focus with FfordSH at 97k and have since done a further 6.5k in 10 months without any problems. Only thing I did was to change the timing belts.

If the car feels good on the test drive and you are happy with all the basic checks/ bodywork and general condition then I can't see any serious problems with it (unless the vag 1.6 has a major fault I am unaware off).

If it hasn't had money spent on it most will have very loose and clonky suspension by that age (same as a MK4 Golf).

Thanks for your help people . I've heard from a few people that the VAG 1.6 is prone to gearbox failure after 100,000 miles. Is there any truth in this?

My mate has an X reg 1.6
He's had lots of gearbox & aircon issues come up since the car hit 80k.
