I have a Polo G40, 1992/J, 2 owners from new with full VAG history in dark blue met. with 110,000 miles.
She is in good condition, do I keep her as a future 'Classic' of turn her into a track sg ? Chrome cage, strip the trim out... (she is just too nice for this?)

What company's do good parts to exchange her from road to track ?

Thanks

Darren at G-Werkz comes highly reccomended for these beasties.

If it's straight and original I'd be selling it as is. MK3 Polos don't handle all that well in my experience.

Whats it worth, if I sold it ?

Sorry DrG i have seen in other threads you are very knowledgeble when it comes to dubs but G40s not handling.... dont think so. With the same basic modifications like strut brace , lower front brace and decent suspension a G40 is a very very capable car.

you are correct about darren at G-works > well respected and good at playing with G40s or chargers in general. It is possible to extract some very good power figures from G40s and they dont blow up as often as people make out. If they are well cared for they will provide good power and reliability- oil cooler and boost return pipe for example will help the longevity of the charger. Also try Pitstop developments.

As for a track car it would no doubt be ace, try a search for polo G40 cup cars!! But if im honest i think its terrible that so many perfectly fine G40s are being broken up or turned into track cars. There are enough G40 lumps around it makes it easier to buy a mk3 polo an do a conversion than to find a genuine original.

With 110k , 2 previous owners a decent history and in good condition is going to fetch £2k upwards.

any pics???

I will post some pics up in the next few days..
She has had the same last owner from 1996 !
A few little marks on her, but nothing bad..

Would just seem a shame to track her, you don't see many (nice ones) around !

But-
Cage
Repaint (maybe a euro look)
Engine work (160 bhp)
Brakes
Coil overs

Would look well too..

But I had a MK1 GTI Golf that I did nothing too for years (1 owner, 80k, in white) and it just went up in money. And looking back I am pleased that I never tracked/mod'd that.. Atleast there is another untouched MK1 GTI around, and there getting rare.

What do I do with her ?

a few scaps and dents is to be expected on a car of its age , with a respray expect well over 3k for her.

if you track her keep all the original parts that you remove in order to return it to standard eg the interior - the seats an doorcards are £150+ any day of the week!

with the engine modifications as long as you stay the safe side of 200hp and regularly service the engine- strict oil and pulley belt changes and perhaps rebuilding charger every 30k there is no reason for the engine not to be a good performer :-)

Just bare in mind only 500 ever made it to the UK and current estimates are that there are probably not more than 300 left which when you consider the number of g40 conversions just on clubpolo and polo3 is maybe being generous.

Yea, tracking her would not be good for it !

Getting well into the realms of big money to do it right unfortunately - I'm certain that with the correct cash spent on correct bits they go round corners very nicely but a standard 205, Clio, 106 etc. would run rings around one.

I base my experience on a car owned and setup by one of the boys at Pitstop, he spent a lot of time and money getting it setup properly and he increased the limits of grip and how easy it was to drive considerably - I would never say it was a great handling car though (might have been better with a bit less power, admittedly).

I've not driven a standard G40 but know a number of owners, they've all over the years spent the most time on getting the handling up to scratch.

My G40 is in the proccess of being tracked.

Far from cheap and far from easy. Biggest problem is that nothing is off the shelf for Mk3 polos

Am fitting Emerald management in the next week or so and mapping to ~220bhp.

drop me a meassage if you want to have a proper track.

Still running the G-Lader?

Would be interesting to hear what other mods are needed to achieve that power level, The G40 I mentioned above ended up wearing a turbocharger to achieve that sort of power.

1341 forged pistons running an Eaton.

although tuning a g40 is not really worthwhile any more.

With the ability to go to a 1.5cc obtaining stupid power is the easy part. Harnessing the power, in my opinion has yet to be achieved

What have you got in mind for the diff and suspension? (if such things aren't secrets!)

Suspension - H&R Cup Kit. Going to fit my roll cage as soon as I get a chance.

I have ditched the ARB in favour of a compression strut system. A company called Polo Performance Parts supplied it although I have since discovered another company called Polo Performance Services sell a similar product for about half the price.

The choice of diff is yet to be decided. Will worry about that when my gearbox gives up the fight. It is currently my daily driver so it makes things difficult.

Sounds like a right little fire-cracker!

Any track/strip time planned or is it purely a daily drive?
