My car has done 12,000 now, and apparently I just wait for a light to come on to tell me to take it for a service .. is this right? anyone know about when this is likely to happen?

thanks ..

Before 24 months, before 20,000 miles. Probably.

Ours is 18 months old, 11,000 miles, no light yet.

There is a way to get the dash to flash up no. days/distance to next service - Google it (something like seabelt on, door open, ignition on, turn off, press trip reset - check though).

So how the heck would we know? Our cars are not due yet!?!

On fixed servicing I think its £150-£200. On variable (so less often) the servicing is £200-£250. Price variences depeneding on your locale.

Alright, alright, keep your Alans on. Only asking the Pistonheads collective.

Individual dealer rates can vary a bit, but anything around £120 sounds very fair for a main dealer.

Price depends on where you are and what you have done.

Cheapest is oil service with non longlife oil, sounds like the £120 quoted
more expensive is longlife service, the longlife with 2 yr inspection, then 2yr with longlife with rake fluid change at 2 yr period. So expect people to qoute anything from 120 to 270 based on what is done , and in which part of the country. make sure you know what you are getting done.

Agreed, that'll be an annual at that price but if you drive a GTI properly you should be changing the oil at least annually anyway.

6200 miles???? I take it the car was two years old when it came in??

The extra cost was probably the brake fluid change, extra 0.6 hours or so.

The pollen filter should be done at 20k, but I think it might be done at 2 years regardless of milage, so that might have bumped the price up a bit too.

Oh and if you live in London labour rate is probably £120 an hour + Vat.

Where I am its £88 + Vat.

Nope it's nearly one year old, display said 4100 miles or 12 days till next service so I opted for the 12 days as it gets a lot of short runs. Was just the first service, no brake fluid.
Parts were oil - filter - washer - pollen filter.

They didn't even wash the fecker.

If set up for variable servicing car should go 2 years or how ever many miles it decides you can get out of the oil. Typically 14k-18k. Less if you do lots of short runs, but will always be more than 9k miles.

Sounds like yours was set up for fixed. (car comes in every year or 10K miles) You could have it change at next service, a good service adviser would have spotted that and asked you. I'd asked them about variable service next time.

I think we charge 1.3 hours + the oil + the parts, (on an A3 but its the same) I have nothing to do with the invoicing, so i dont know the exact amount you see. The price its self isn't much more than us, but it strikes me, it didn't need a service, and defiantly didn't need a pollen filter.

In the UK you should service your can at least every 12-months. The 'variable service' intervals kit is for high millage business users who rack up 30k-odd miles a year. Under those conditions (long constant use) the oil / filter etc.. can last a lot longer than the 'standard' 12k. It's a system that isn't suitable for Private driver useage.

ALL! VAG cars, or at least all the Audi's I work on, are set to variable from the factory, unless otherwise stated at order, we only change them to fixed when specifically asked by the customer, and it is very rare. The expensive "longlife" oil allows them to do the extra millage.

UK market is no different to the rest of Europe.

But it is different to other parts of the world (climate wise).

I suspect there are a lot of factors that go into recommending the service interval, and that the answer that comes out after all the lawyers, marketeers and accountants have stuck their fingers in is a long way from the engineering answer.

I also suspect that a lot of oil is changed unnecessarily early as it used to give cheap 'peace of mind' against engine wear (Which is something that only specialists really understand).

However, oil (especially VW 507.1 !) is no longer cheap and paying someone £200 to do something that doesn't really need doing is a habit that is best avoided!

My Elise didn't have an oil change for several years - currently only does a few K a year due to kids and work, has good quality synthetic in it and is none the worse for it. Likewise my VW does 25K a year on long life intervals, currently at 125K in spite of people telling me that I if I did't change the oil every 10K it would clog up and expire....
