Hello. I've got one of the above cars and have had it for about 5 months. Love the car and it does everything I want (kids, blasts, motorway).
Anyway I recently met a friend who was taking his M3 CSL round a track day and it got me thinking.
Does anyone have any experience with chips for this engine and if so what is to be expected.
Also how would one of these cope with a track day. My friends CSL seemed to cook the brakes after about 6 laps, so in theory the S8 should kill its brakes sooner. I just worry about what else would break.
Cheers for any points.

Was pricing in a bowzer full of unleaded to cope with the ecconomy. Though if marketing is anything to go buy chipping it will increase the ecconomy so long and I 'don't' use all the new power. Makes sense.

You won't get much extra hp / NM via a re-map from a non turbo engine.

Plus, if you have any engine issues the warranty might be in jeopardy if Audi twig the map has been twiddled with.

Thats what I was worried about. They make all sorts of 'maximum' claims but in reality I doubt I'll feel any difference. Just a thought.

With a re-map on your S8 you will get about 10% extra power and torque and you should get at least 2-3mpg extra. But a re-map on a normally aspirated engine is not just about headline power increases. With a remap you will get imporved throttle reaponse and much more mid range torque making the car better and more enjoyable to drive.
Also, about the track thing, you would probably be a bit disappointed with your S8 on the track as big and heavy cars are not suited to the track and your brakes would probably catch fire!! If you are willing to put up with these things it is immense fun and gives you a better idea of what your car is capable of. So can make you a better and safer driver on the road (that is what I tell the wife!!).

Go for a full custom map. Will take longer and cost more than a chip but you'll get far better results. Even a chip mapped from a different S8 will not necessarily give the best results on yours.

So, a simple remap will yield 45 brake horse power? What software/testing is this based on?

I must admit i'm a bit surprised about the extra 45BHP.
I agree about the brakes catching fire, as they will go through a bit of punishment. DMS claim they can cip the car so that it does not appear on the audi diagnostic machine, therefore not voiding the warrenty. Is this true of just marketing?

Again, as said a re-map might have warranty implications if the motor breaks.

Am very sceptical of tuning claims from re-maps, a run to the speed limiter both pre and post map with a GPS data logger should do the trick, would be interesting the see the two traces overlaid.

May I quickly congratulate you on the car?

I know of no other saloon with more class or prescence: it is simply exquisite.

Stunning.wink

Thanks.
This is one of the only cars that I have not got bored of after 6 months. Would recomend one to anyone. I've had mercs (AMG), BMW M cars and a few Porsches. Fos a saloon is doeseverything, except go round a track without setting on fire.

Audi cannot 'see' the software upgrade, this is true. What they can see is the 'flash counter' on the ECU, this just increments by 1 whenever an update is applied (exactly the same as when Audi apply a factory update). Providing we'r enot talking big numbers then on a second hand car Audi don't pay any attention to this.

Unless you were getting straight out of a standard 5.2 you probably wouldn't spot the difference in drive anyway. I would say that 10% is a bit of a bull crap claim, you'll probably see a modest gain at high RPM with a subtle increase in torque and snappier throttle response.

not sure on the new S8's but the older ones where not as heavy as you might imagine. The guys in the know on the newer A8/S8's will advise there. but its not a track car but i am sure the whole hing might be fun if your with a mate in a like for like car.

Was on a run last year with a few quattros through the highlands going over the Lecht road to see an S8 sideways in my rearview mirror, followed by a 540 spin on a single track road. somehow evaded a nasty accident but he caught marbles at the edge of the road just from the shear width of the car. driver enjoyed himself despite the fright, and it was quick, just enormous in the rearview mirror....

chips i would agree with above all i can see it doing is smoothing out the power curve and making a bit more responsive, gains i think would be just hittign double figure BHP i woudl imagine, but its more how its delivered. Money probably better spent on a spare set of wheels/tyres and/or brakes if your serious about track days. try it first and see smile

Original A8 is lighter than a similar age A4.

yep a quick google reveals my B6 a4 quattro is as heavy as the current S8... I knew the original S8 was light relative to its size/ market.
