I have just joined the ranks of the Audi clan.....

N reg Audi Coupe, 2.6i non quattro, half leather, air con, 110K, yea me!!!bounce

As I get my licence back on Monday following my health problems I won't pick it up till the middle of the week. Its not got a huge amount of MOT left on it but my friend (mechanic) drove it and all seemed well. Lots of service history & previous MOTs to verify the mileage but my mate is going to MOT before I collect it.(I have some budget for any problems in reserve.)

When its sitting in my drive I'll post some piccies and some more details. If it passes the MOT ok (which it should.) I will be a very happy bunny! bounce

Thanks for the welcome guys. As I mentioned on OP I'll put some more info on it when its at Casa de Toad.

Was quite worried yesterday as with being out of work for a year funding was a light tight to put it mildy but now I'm looking forward to getting it home.smile

Welcome to the wonderful world of Panzer driving.

A word of warning though: you must keep a careful eye on all older Audis as they do have a tendency to head off towards Poland when they think no one's looking...

i sold my coupe a fewq months ago, must admit still miss it. Sniff!
Had two 2.8 quattros, a saloon then laterly a coupe. Coupe is a great car, realyl solid build, there are a few usual suspects to look out for on the V6s and the coupe shape.

Quickly;
Front suspension takes more of a hammering on the V6's, check for wear.
Fuel lines - made of poor material, often replaced for plastic or microbore.
V6's do have a fair bit of tappet chatter, should go away once warm.
coupe boot notorious for leaking, light cluster seals usual issue.
rear calipers prone to sticking, cleaning resolves for a while.

110k miles is barely broken in, the V's looked after will go for galactic miles. seen many way over 300k, know of one at 700k.

Do change the oil regularly it is 5k internals for the 12v V's.
www.12v.org good reference site.

Thanks for the info and the site, istoo. Very helpful and the site is now book marked.

Checked the front suspension throughly all seems to be okay, he changed some of it at the last MOT.

Didn't know about the leaking boot, couldn't see any damage but I'll check it out when I get the car down the jet wash!

Fuel lines seem to be fine and the oil he's put in it seems to be brand new.

Somebody mentioned to me that the headlights are as much use as a candle in a baked bean tin. Any thoughts?

Nice car and nice lazy unstressed engine... used to run my 2.6e cab for 10p of fuel per mile back in 2002/3!

Only other area of concern for me, (bar the poor lights rolleyes) was the handbrake ratchet failed. Cost £100 from Crewe Audi to fix at the time.

the head lights are indeed like candles. I remember answering a big thread on the B4 cars a month or so back, so could have been me.

I had an HID upgrade as part of a group buy with audifans on my coupe to allow me to see, however the problem is with the light cast by the reflector, after a few hours at my local audi indy (fortunately a pal) we got the headlights with a passable light pattern, using the plastic patches you get for changing hte light pattern for RHD to LHD. Not ideal but it worked and i could once again see. These sets have dropped heaps in price now circa £100.

HOWEVER the real solution will be to upgrade to S2 reflector style lights ( not cheap £200-300) these will be better than the older reflectors anyway, then uprate those to HID, or try out the phillips 50 - 80% brighter bulbs they do make a difference. Beats driving with the fogs on, notable at this time of year.

Options!

one design flaw with the coupe big whale tail, open the boot in the rain and it floods in, you develop a knack of opening the boot a touch to drain the spoiler then lift it up!

Look at the rear light clusters for water in them, lift the rear flap under the boot and look for signs of water will be obvious, IF you have it. you will see when you lift the boot that the water flows behind the rear lights, there is a sticky material bonding the lights to the body a 3M maritime type bonding, this fails in time and lets in water, only when its hosing it down. easy to replace just takes AGES.

don't let his put you off, the coupe is a great car. overkill engineeering from Audi at its very best!

Hmmmm. the S2 light upgrade isn't available on my budget. If they are a like-4-like replacement could you give me the part/type number for the Philips bulbs so I can get them ordered before I collect the car?

Thanks for all the tips.thumbup

Quick update.....

Passed its MOT with flying colours today but have been advised that it needs a water pump. So they're going to pop one while they're doing the belts.

The mechanic said its one of the best he's seen for a while so I might have got myself a bargain!!bounce

Anyway not so much of the chicken counting. It will be here on Saturday, with a bit of luck piccies and full description on Sunday.

As promised pictures of my new pride & joy;

New alloy wheel centres and wheel nuts on the way, 10 CD player & Thule roof bar adopters already on eBay and she drives like a dream. (so far touch wood, fingers crossed.). There will be the spare set of standard alloys (including a brand new wheel and tyre) going on eBay soon.

Now the big question; how much?

bit late but if your doing the belts, do the tensioner as well, water pump is also good advice. Serpentine powers a lot on the V's

indigo blue that is, same as my old one, looks black in some lights. comes up REALLY well with meguairs claybar and a polish. that colour takes a polish and a clean really well... enjoy it, i loved mine...

Yours looks really in good nick too. And you've got a quattro you swine!

They did the tensioner at the same time as the belts but although they thought the water pump was iffy it turned out that the aircon was the one making the noise. Been told that if it goes its £500 but I just won't use it that much. If it does go then I'll change the belts again to a non aircon car and bypass.

Gave it a good jet wash the other day and it came up lovely. My mate is going to 'liberate' an autoglym pack for me to get it all polished up nice. It must be my crappy camera but its actually green! If you know what shade they did for it that would be helpful.

If you've still got yours, I've got a brand new standard wheel and tyre sitting behind me now if you would like to make me an offer before it goes on ebay at the weekend?

Thanks for the advice again.

P.S. Its called "The Panzer" because its green and is built like a tank.

green, well must be my eyes, i swore it was indigo blue! the green i think is ragusa green which is also a really deep colour.

As for cleaning products, i used Turtle Wax for years then last year eventually took the plunge and bought some expensive Meguairs gear. i cant rate it enough, really worth the money. its a slippery slope, i know folk who spend an utter fortune on cleaning products!

I dont have it anymore, sold 3 months ago. i got my first quattro 5 years ago, and haven't been able to buy anything else since. that aside i still reckon that era of car is about as good as it gets for build quality.
