I'm looking for a quick estate car for recreational use ie snowboarding, surfing and mountain biking. I began toying with the idea of selling the tiv and getting an RS4 but having looked through the classifieds discovered very reasonable priced RS6's. Knowing very little about them I was looking for some more info.

Are they all 450 bhp? if so what does this relate to interms of speed ie 0-60
Are they all wheel drive like the rs4?
What are the serviving intervals?
What should I look for when buying one?
Do the rear seats drop?

Any comments appreciated

They all are Quattro (4WD)and that's permanant,The seats fold, and they are excellent cars all pushing 450BHP Standard.

My other half is looking at getting one,so hopefully sometime soon. They really are excellent value for what they are.I for one love them,in fact i love most Audi's.All S and RS models have quattro.

Hope this helps a little smile

Excellent choice.

To answer your questions:
Are they all 450 bhp? Yes.
if so what does this relate to interms of speed ie 0-60? 4.7 seconds.
Are they all wheel drive like the rs4? Yes.
What are the serviving intervals? 12 months or 10k miles.
Do the rear seats drop? Yes. 60/40.
What should I look for when buying one?
DRC failure. If you can, remove the wheels and check the shocks are not weeping or leaking. That's probably not practical, so watch out for noises during the first few hundred yards when cold, excessive bouncing on ridges on the road, or general floppyness on broken surfaces. If you get a car without warrantee and with failed DRC, do not replace the DRC system - instead, fit Bilstein PSS9 coilovers and have no more suspension worries.

To add - at that price and age I would not get it warranteed or serviced by any one at Audi - use an independent instead.

I bought my car with 5k miles on the clock, so to me, the car was like new.
I have had servicing done by Audi and I've added the Audi warrantee.

So To give you an example of the costs for the last 12 months:

Tax: 205
Insurance: 770
Audi warrantee: 1240
Tyres: 700
Fuel, 10k miles, 110p/l, 17 MPG: 2940
Major Service: 640
Cambelt + ancilliaries: 1335
F+R Brakes and pads (parts only, no labour): 1050

Total: £8880

Sure, it won't cost that much over the next 12 months, as I'll only need a minor service, third party warrantee, but it will still be around 5k including petrol.

I was looking ideally for a private one, advice noted

Thanks for the replies

Also they mostly seem to be auto, are there many manual out there? I was looking to be driving up and down the alps and would feel better with a manual box

They are all auto.

I had a run with a Continental GT yesterday from a standing start on a dual carriageway, I "got the jump" (sorry for the Americanism) because I left-foot braked with a little throttle, I then backed off at 100 and he hadn't gained an inch.

Also, they are pretty loaded as standard, there are no "must haves" on the options list.
I think the only extras on mine are the electrically retracting steering wheel, electrically dipping and folding mirrors, and aluminium dash trim.

Technical data (PDF) can be found here:

The options price list can be found here:

Buy one, buy Milltek, find tunnel, Depress scary pedal, grin like idiot.

There really isn't anything that compares directly to an RS6 - it isn't so much a torque curve as a torque plateau laugh

What a surprise!

Dave has appeared.

Dave bought a lemon and was generally unlucky. Say RS6 three times and he appears like a genie (or a bad smell, depending on your view point wink ).

Don't let one owner's bad experience put you off. Once you have one, you will have a hard job finding a replacement which offers the same combination of 4wd traction, practicality, V8 soundtrack, performance and class - it does have a lot of road presence.

I bought a new one in 2004 and it was a fantastic car. I would really love another one, but I need something a bit more economical and the wife wont let me - we lost a fortune on ours !eek

This one looks good value - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/353752.htm

Dude I drive a TVR....there is no way a small issue like reliability will get in my way...check out my Tuscan profile biggrin

My A3 has also had an engine rebuild but I found Audi to be exceptional about it, especially as it was free and they gve me an A6 while it was being fixd. TVR didnt even give me a coffee biggrin

Feel free to email me through my profile...I assume from your profile an A3 in px would be a reasonable idea.

Mmmm, I differ from most on here with the RS6. I wasn’t that impressed, gearbox was naff imo should have been a manual. Of course the DRC was a constant pain in the arris (and I know this can be changed but that’s not the point, it should bloody work!) and even if an Audi dealership have given the ok on the DRC on a car you may be looking at I wouldn’t be to confident as most dealerships don’t have the expertise to sort it properly. Dated interior and a very old chassis showed the car up when pushing her as big lump. I think the car is overpriced for what she is, compare to say an S6 same shape, same body (apart from bumpers), same interior, still a V8 (granted, less bhp then the RS6) add RS6 wheels and Miltek and you’ll have a cheaper looking RS6 with respectable power but for a fraction of the price of one.
Having said that, for what you want its sounds ideal. They are very thirsty cars though and will munch through tyres if driven hard (which is very hard to avoid), servicing is ludicrous at dealerships but that can be overcome by going to a specialist. If you’re after a big, roomy, monster of a car and do mainly motorway mileage and you can cope with the above then this is for you.
I’d like to add I have owned an S4, RS4, S6 and the RS6, I just expected more from the RS6.
