The 16vs have a red "16v" badge on the front rather than saying GTI - like this:

16v

8v

Years back i drove a friends 8v (terrible no power) and nearly bought a 16v (had to rev the wotsits off it to get it going) but drove a VR6 and then bought one as they are imo the only mk3 worth having... noticed the prices of the later post 96 VRs are looking good btw wink Go out and drive them all and make your own mind up.

mk3 2.8 VR's are still a bit slow and very thirsty. IMO the mk3 is just too heavy and that 2.8 VR engine is a bit underpowered.

the only vr6 to have is one of these:

either that or a MK2 with a 2.9 conversion ;-)

whats the corrado 16v like any good?

See this is going to be my dailey runner as the wife has the A3 during the day. Iv got 2.5-3 to play with.

So i need something that i can rely on so put it down to BMW, VW and Audi.

Now for me the bmw 318 is to old looking now so put that one out the window.

So what are we left with?

Golf Gti 16v (which i now have found out are hard to find)
Golf VR6 iv been reading are ok but not that great
Corrado VR6 a few about but many high milers out there so have to be picky
Corrado 16v no idea on these but a few good ones left about
A3 1.8T
A3 1.8T sport (if i can find a low millage one)

now we have a A3 Sline 170 with bbs wheels and black leather int so tbh an old A3 would not do much justice so we are left with VW.

Iv got about 3 weeks to find what i wont so i thought id ask you appions here.

you will need to get the chains swapped @120K miles if i remember right. check the corrado forum for a buyers guide.

most corrado's will have done 100K + these days. not a problem.

now go get one :-)

Ive got a 97 16v golf 3 door in dragon green that will be for sale in about 3 weeks or as soon as my company car turns up. its got 12 months mot, new brakes new tyres and new eibach suspension so it sticks like shit to a blanket!

Its great fun and the 16v is the one to have!

You can look under the bonnet for a start and that will be the best indication of what your looking for.

I'm in northampton and would be happy to show you mine

Yes, the Mk3 GTI 16v is the secret star of the Mk3 Golf range. My stepmother had one of the first and it was fantastic. Much quicker than my 8v (150bhp plays 115bhp), and more agile and sharp than the VR6. They are rare though as (1) they were underrated so few were bought and (2) they are good so people tend to hang onto them.

There's not much in it visually between the 8v and 16v, until you dive under the bonnet obviously. Apart from the front and rear red "16v" badges:

1. Alloys. Early Mk3 16vs (pre-95) wore smart 5-spoke "Monaco" alloys whereas the 8vs wore nasty bin-lid type jobs. It's harder with post-95 cars, as thereafter the 8v and 16v shared the common multi-spoke "Longbeach" design. A car with "Solitude" alloys (shared with the Golf VR6 Highline and Corrado VR6 Storm) is probably (unless they are retro-fitted) an indicator that it is a Colour Concept and the Colour Concept (in black, bright green, yellow, red, or bright blue with matching leather) cars are all 8vs. A car with BBS split-rims, a red pinstripe in the bumpers and a garish check interior is likely to be an Anniversary and these can be either 8v or 16v.

2. Aerial. Early Mk3 16vs (pre-95) have roof-mounted beesting aerials whereas the 8vs had wing-mounted retracting aerials. Again, it's harder with post-95 cars, as thereafter the 8v and 16v both got the beesting aerial.

3. Ride Height. As standard, the Mk3 16v has lowered suspension compared to the 8v, but you're a better man than me if you can spot the difference.

Most are on cheap, generic aftermarket dampers by now hence ride heights being odd frown

MK3 16v with some light tweaks (as above) is a good little Q car smile

anyone help?
I'm looking at a MK3 GTI and have seen what look like BBS cross spokes on it. original VW/BBS wheels, any idea what size theyd be (standard) as the car will need 2 new tyres... Cheers

both 8v & 16v have 195/50x15 tyres as standard

but......those BBS cross-spoke....if there the one's i think they are (the ones with a large centre cap covering the wheel nuts)....these are usually found on early VR6's

VR6's have 205/50x15 tyres as standard

I've looked through the MK3 posts and have yet to find a thread that would answer this question.
I know its a personal choice but, whats the pro's & cons of the the 8v over the 16v Mk3. I've got about a grand to buy one. I realise that I won't get a minter, but theres plenty about - even some 16v's.
If anyone knows of any good ones going anywhere let me know.

Cheers

Having owned a Mk3 GTI 8v myself and driven my stepmother's old Mk3 GTI 16v extensively, I cannot think of any obvious reasons for buying the 8v instead of the 16v other than that the 8v is much more common and therefore easier to find a good example of! The 16v is a much better car to drive but I suppose it may be cheaper to insure an 8v.

Agree with previous post, the 16v is miles better than the 8v in every area plus theyre much quicker, but they are quite hard to find now, whereas 8v's are plentiful.
