Any gunk about the filler cap?
The breather pipe that comes off just below the cap could be blocked if theres gunk around the cap?
(just a thought, as my step mums Golf gti was running bad/lumpy and a friend cleaned the breather pipe as it was all gunked up through to her only doing short journeys. It ran allot better after)

Is that near the oil filler cap on the air filter box?
It has seemed better since using Shell petrol than usual supermarket petrol; also making sure I don't treat this 1.0 litre car like my old 1.8 nissan when you could cruise around at about 1,000-1,500 rpm town driving in 5th as I could be coking it up?

In January this year. Servicing these days is just changing Oil/Filter and checking a few things. Air Filter was done last year, spark plugs at 40k as per manual.
The Mrs had similar on hers it cost a small fortune but twas under guarentee it took main dealer 1½week to find, basically changed everything in ignition/fuel lines apparently (so they said).

Maybe it's my fuel pump as that has always sounded a bit noisy, occasional jurgling..

Took it to my local garage and they said it's too difficult to find the intermittent fault and it needs to break down more consistently - it could be any number of things; and very costly to start looking now
also saw this similar fault:
