Hi all.

Unbearable road noise from S5 fitted with 255/35 ZR Dunlop SP Sport Max.

Any recommendations for a quieter running tyre? Optimum grip not required, better compromise is!

Thanks in advance.

No, actually, I have a 911. Mate of mine has an S5. But, as I'm connected to the tyre business, he's asked me for help. Couldn't think of a better source of info than PH.

I drove one with PS2's and it was ok on motorway but a bit noisey on A/B roads, tolerable though.

These are noted as very noisy but most S5s are equipped with the MAXX GT version which is a lot quieter and seems better performer - see recent EVO tyre test the MAXX came 8th out of 9. He must have an early model,ex-demo car or July-August delivery.

I like Mich pilot sports, but Generally our customers say the continentals are quieter than the Dunlops, on almost any models.
Have had issues with Dunlops make axle like noises on a few cars, but not A5's.

IMO, Mich Pilot Sp's are just as noisey as the Dunlops. Tyres will always be a compromise between how long they last and how noisey they are. The harder the tyre = the more miles it will do = the noisier it will be. As a driver who hates excess road noise, but who also doesn't want to keep replacing my boots every 15K miles or less, have found the best alround solution to be either Bridgestone Pot's, or Pirelli PZeros.

If anyone has seen a test of the Dunlop Sport MAXX "GT" version I would like to read it. As posted earlier the non-GT variant came out 8 out of 9 in the latest EVO tyre test. Whether Audi chose it for the S5 for reasons other than cost would be good to know.

Hi

It's James at Dunlop here.

The Sport Maxx GT is an evolution of the Sport Maxx with more emphasis on handling, steering response and dry weather grip (whilst still providing good levels of wet grip).

It has been developed with OE fitment on M-cars, RS4, S4/S5 etc in mind, whereas the standard Sport Maxx is more of an A4/Golf Gti type of tyre with slightly more emphasis on 'less hardcore' handling, comfort and lower noise.

James,
That's good to know. Do you have any Test reports on how these aspects of thte GT's performance has been compared with competing makes? It is standard fit on UK S5s whereas US destined cars get Bridgstones, if you can explain why that should be and whether it is a US regs. issue or just to even up the supply to 2 companies.
Thanks
