used ones tend to go for 800-1500 depending on what car it's from. They don't say what engine code it is, and some (say BAM) are worth more than others (say AUM).

Bearing in mind that other race teams may have their eyes on it, I think it'll go for upwards of 1800.

However, it doesn't come with the turbo, which I'd also want to be new - no problem if you're going IHI or GT28. I assume it's a project car you're looking at?

A new short engine from Audi for my S3 was close to £2000 just for that, so if it really is a new head as well that would cost a lot of money from Audi, however it does depend which engine code it is.

Yep engine code is odd , as the blocks are all the same i thought apart from the AUDI S3 may have different sump i was told. The factory engine for sale is the big valve head version.(IE TURBO UNIT)
The engine codes only seem refer to the ancillaries fitted to engines, is this correct.paperbag
Thanks for any help.

There are changes between the different engine codes as to things like VVT and the engine internals are differnet on different engine codes, the S3 engines (APY/AMK/BAM) should all have forged pistons etc. but the APY should have the strongest (larger) pins etc. My new short engine came with APY stamped in the correct place so it should have an engine code on it from what I've seen.

The large port head isn't off the S3 that'd be off the A3 1.8T / Golf (think it was AGU engine code from memory) but it's probably the best head if you're looking to modify it in the future.
