I've got a '97 vw polo 1.9D with 110k on the clock. I think the biting point is quite high but is there a way of seeing if this is the clutch without taking it apart and if it is the clutch - seeing as most of the driving i'm doing at the moment isn't far from where i'm living (so i wouldn't be stranded anywhere), is it worth getting it changed or just waiting until it bites no more?? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Is it slipping at all? How many miles has the clutch done? I assume it's on the original?

Try booting it and seeing if you can slip it, then you'll know it's on the way..

If it's not slipping, I wouldn't worry. is it squeeling?

The biting point on my GTI has been high for the last 3 years, I'm expecting it to go at any minute, but it never has. You'll know when it goes smile

Put it in 4th and give it some welly from low revs up a steep hill. If the revs flair (out of proportion to speed) its slipping.

My 1998 Passat had a stupidly high biting point but no slip. Turned out to be an air bubble caught in the hydraulics. Try bleeding the system if your clutch doesn't work off a cable.

Its unlikely that a clutch will go suddenly through wear. Our clipper at 140k has the original clutch. The biting point is very high, and it had been slipping for around 4 years and 40k, but only in a high gear from low revs, on a high load. Never bothered replacing it.
