Is my fusebox about to catch fire?
Discussion
Just had a call from the wife who has taken her '98 Golf GTi in for it's first service under our ownership, to a VW main dealer.
First phone call she recieved was to advise that front discs need replacing along with a couple of bulbs & wipers. Fair do's thinks I.
She has now had a phonecall saying that the 'fusebox is shorting out and could catch fire at any moment' so it needs replacing at a cost of £115.
Is this a common/known fault with VWs?
My limited knowledge on electrical things suggests that the whole purpose of fuses is that they 'blow' when there is a fault as opposed to catching fire. Therefore, is the dealer trying it on?
Any thoughts?

Do they mean the normal fusebox or smaller one on top of the battery (assuming you've got a mk4).
If the one on top of the battery, there are 4 large (>30A) fuses which can melt the box when they blow. However, if you find the problem causing the fuses to blow then it will stop them shorting. One of mine blew due to cooling fans being faulty but the box didn't melt or catch fire.
Does your car have climate control of normal a/c ?
Brakes - never pay dealer prices imo. Always find an local independent or diy.

Cheers Vee.
I don't know which fusebox it is, but we have asked to see the old one when we pick the car up tomorrow.
Agree about the brakes and we normally wouldn't go to a dealer (indeed, this is the first time we've ever set foot in a dealers), but just after convenience and accountability this time around as the wife is nearly 8 months pregnant and I'm working like a wh

e...The old brake disc job is a classic!
Make it sound scary and safety critical and people will never question it.
I must have had that a dozen times on various cars and vans here at work, ask them what thickness they are and what the manufacturers specify as the minimum thickness and then decide for yourself if the disks need changing.
I hate main dealer garages!!
Caveat :- Clearly there are some good ones though.

On a 1998 car its not unrealistic that it could do with discs isit really.
Nope, that's why it works so well.Sorry to say, especialy well on women but lots of blokes too.
It's also not unreasonable to believe it might have already had them at some point in the last 9 years.
They don't degrade with age, just wear thin with use.
As "creative selling" goes, it's an old one but still going strong it seems!!
