DSG Problem? '05 TT
Discussion
Hi all, my girlfriend just called me from the hard shoulder - she was driving her 3.2 TT DSG at 70MPH in Auto and then put it into Sport (I've not done this myself so dont know if this is a wise thing to do or what the consequences are).
She said that when she did this, it seemed like the engine braked sufficiently enough to bring the car to a near standstill (in the fast lane, quickly enough to cause 2 or 3 cars to take serious evasive action)....ie. high revs and serious engine noise as if it had gone from 6th to 1st gear.
She managed to get to the hard shoulder and noticed that the brake pedal was able to be pushed down to the floor...she thinks (bear with her as she's a bit shocked by what just happened) that she also braked heavily to slow the car down when all this happened but could this single brakeing manouvre from high speed have caused serious brake fade in one go?
She has managed to start the car and continue (in Auto at slow speed to be safe)
Car is a 2005 with 19k miles.
Anyone had any experience of anything like this or heard of anything like this before? I'm not even sure its at all possible for the DGS to go from 6th to 4th...but I'm no expert.
The car is still under Warranty, but we are not the 1st owners - does this make a difference if we wanted Audi to check the car over/run diags to check for any problems?
Thanks,
Ross

You can change into Sport at any time and the DSG will change down to the lowest (numerical) gear that it can and, of course, the revs will rise dramatically. Nothing like you describe ever happened to me in my TT and I have never heard of any other owners having this happening to them.
I would get down the dealers asap. The warranty is on the car not the owner so you should have no problems.

Cheers Steve, I can only think that the speed at which she dropped down a gear, due to moving it into Sport, caused the revs to rise high real quick....I think the noise and engine retardation just scared the life out of her and she braked instinctively.
Women hey...I should have git her a 1.8t. I have driven the car tonight, checked it all over and it all seems fine.
Thanks god noboddy was hurt.
Cheers again,
Ross

That pretty much sums it up.
The DSG will as said further up the thread pick the lowest gear in which acceleration is available which could mean some engine braking.
However DSG also "blips" the throttle on downshifts to prevent exactly the circumstances you described.
I'm not name-calling but it seems to me more like a situation where (in essentially an automatic car) the driver has forgotten it is not a manual and has gone through the motions of pressing the clutch pedal (which of course is not present and instead the brake pedal (being oversized) has got the full force of the left leg which is not used to finessing the brake pedal) and hence the car was essentially put into an emergency stop in the outside lane.
I only mention as it has happened to me more times than I care to mention when some people "who are challenged in the Y chromazone department" have test driven DGS with me.
Thoughts?
