***** HELP PLEASE ******* Quattro Not Working!!!!
Discussion
My brother has an A3 Quattro Sport 180, and the 4 wheel drive system is not working. Basically, its a 2 wheel drive piece of c##p!!
He keeps getting "fobbed" off by the Dealer who reckons its tyre wear. He failed to notice that the front wheels were spinning and rear wheels weren't. Has anybody else experienced this problem? If so, what was the outcome? (By the way, its clocked up a modest leggy 71k for 2000W )
Thank you for your help in advance.

I'm guessing this is the same Haldex 4wd system as in the TT? Our TT needed a new Haldex ECU just before the warranty ran out (I did check with a second dealer). Not sure it mean't the 4wd wasn't working ... but your mate might want to get that ECU checked - should be able to plug in a diagnostic thingy in and get any data about problems.
Won't you still get a bit of wheelspin from the front because the system only puts a certain % of power to the rear wheels? (can't remember how much). Even so, you shouldn't see major front wheel spinnage unless the fronts are on a slippy surface ...
I'd try an independent - several well resected ones, incl. AMD in Bicester - they have no reason not to tell the truth.

We took it a dirt track, dumped the clutch.Nothing from the rear wheels but of course loads from the front. Also, it torque steers like a b##tard, doesn't feel stable at all. I've told him to take it somewhere else, which hopefully he'll do this week. Does that sound similar to your TT problem?
The Haldex system on your A3 is computer controlled and relies on sensors to tell it what the wheels are doing with respect to each other. If any part of this system has failed it will default to front wheel drive (which it does normally, Haldex is after all basically a front wheel drive system with rear wheel assist when needed) so the chances are it is an electrical fault. Get a specialist (AMD is a good choice) to plug in a VAG-com unit and get any error codes from the system, chances are it is duff digital bits, if not an expensive diff replacement beckons. If you cannot get to a specialist, you can download versions of the software and make a cable up, just do a web search on VAG com.
Problem Solved..!
My brother posted the original message for me.
The problem has now been solved. After replacing the Haldex Unit, Repairing the Wireing loom. It was apparently the diff after 4 weeks in the Garage.
It is now back up to full speed on 4 wheels, boy did i miss it, loan cars are crap.
