I have been offered a low mileage example at a fair bit below what similar examples are advertised for in the autotrader, what is the general consensus on them, anything in particular to look for? although if miles are genuine and condition as described there should be very little to report. I guess really I want to know how well the 4wheel drive set up works and how critical is the price difference between components on the standard car and parts on the 4motion set up. thank you in anticipation of your advice

I was very impressed with ours. Really wish I hadn't have sold it now as the replacement has never filled the gap.

The majority of the time the car is 2wd, its only when the front loses traction that drive is shifted backwards. I have found it has amble traction, and due to the heavy lump up front doesn't tend to break traction very often. It was handy in the snow, as I live up an un-gritted hill, but to be honest I think it could get away without 4wd.

The added cost comes from the servicing needed, which are oil and filter changes, although the combined service is only a little of £100. Touch wood it hasn't broken, so I can't say how much it would cost to fix anything mechanical.

Other additional service charges are due to there being 6 cylinders, which adds 50% with regards to spark plugs and leads. Your garage may also try and charge you more for labour, as the engine takes up most of the engine bay and it's a bitch to do anything without removing other parts.

Check the fans are working properly see here http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/thread/449 . Also just have a general look around on the site, it will tell you everything you need to know.

I love my car, so I'm totally biased, but the sound of the exhuast and the mid-range grunt do it for me. Well worth the step up (or sideways, not to wind up GTI lovers!) from the V5 or GTI in my opinion.

Edited to correct link.

They are not bad cars. I dont think the 4wd adds concerns for reliability / running costs. You can have the more generic Mk4 issues such as cooling fans and MAF sensors and the cost of plugs is of course a bit higher as theres more of them.

You can get the power down nicely out of bends although the handling is too floaty for my liking. Best thing is the engine. Its not as grunty as 204 bhp leads you to believe, but it is very tractable and pulls smoothly in any gear from low revs. Above 4500rpm the power starts to swell and it does sound good. As a discreet all-rounder I think they are a decent car and are excellent value. I tried an R32 and although clearly a far superior handler, it felt little quicker for almost 3 times the outlay.
