Hi, quick question: a mates g/friend has put a crack in the sump and I offered to replace it for him, rather than paying a fortune at the dealers. It's a 1998 Golf GTi 1.8turbo. However, when I went to order a sump, the VW dealer told me that they sell two different kinds: one with an oil sensor and one without. They couldn't though tell me which one to order......(I even gave them the VIN number of the car and they were still none the wiser). Said mate wants to drop it off next weekend so I would like to get it sorted for then. Obviously if I had prior access to the car I could just jack it up and have a look.....I'm assuming that it will have an oil sensor do to the spec of the engine....but can anyone confirm this for me???

Cheers,

Andrew

Can't help you with your question I am afraid, but would be interested to know what price VW were looking for for a replacement.

I've got a "patched" crack in the sump of my passat that need to be replaced / welded. Mine looks like a right b!tch to get off too!

Pretty sure it hasn't got the sensor. Mines a 1999 that I had to replace the sump on, small crack -

VW had no trouble getting the right part though, it's an AGU engine code.

I think it came to about 120 quid or thereabouts. Need the sealant too!

Fairly easy job but 2 of the bolts are a bit of a bugger to get to!

That’s great. Is it anymore involved than simply getting under the car and unbolting the sump or do you need to start removing other parts to get to some of the bolts? Would rather know exactly what needs to be done before I start. You mention sealant – does the new sump not come with a gasket? Is it just generic sealant or some VW specific item?

Thanks

The plastic undertray has to come off and an oil feed pipe IIRC. Other than that pretty straight forward. 2 bolts are a little offset into the gearbox bell housing that can be tricky to do.

No gasket it's a goo stuff that you put on. VW should supply with the sump.

Excellent. One more thing – is there a specific torque setting for the sump bolts?

The torque setting of choice to be sure.

A little loctite will stop the bolts coming loose and leaking.

Stuff like that I usually do up to when the ratchet gives resistance, then another 1/4 turn.

My mate clearly doesn’t believe the word of PH’ers and has gotten his girlfriend to take it to a garage “for them to have a look” just in case it does have an oil sensor……philistine!

I’m sure the garage won’t charge anything at all for merely “taking a look”….. rolleyes
