I am thinking of chiping my TDI, I don't want to spend a fortune doing it as it is a cheap car, but I have seen a T-BOX50 for non PD TDI's on ebay for £50. it takes BHP from 110 to 140 and NM from 235 to 285.
Question is I have to find out if I have 8 or 10 pin plug, where is it in the bay? also anyone else done this? is it worth while? do you feel the diffrance?

I wouldn't use a tuning box. I would have it remapped.

yes but a remap is £500, hardly jutifyable on a £4k car.

A re-map from Chippeduk isn't £500.

The don't bother.

I'm sure £500 can be bettered by someone, and a proper reputable remap will be massively cheaper than a blown turbo or melted set of pistons thanks to some bodge you picked up from a faceless entity on the internet.

Were you honestly thinking of buying a £50 box that promised that kind of hike, and expecting there to be no downsides? If it were that easy, they everyone would do it for £50

Hi Jonny,

Not gone this route myself but most people tend to avoid the boxes and go for remaps..
..but a few have gone for boxes and say its fine..
..and I'm yet to find a thread of someone who went the box route and it all went pear shaped.

If the Audi is not your P&J and you see it as an acceptable risk based on the value of the car, why do give it a try. I for one would be keen to hear how it went.

Sorry can't help further

All the best

On an A3 the plug is just off the ful pump on the front of the engine as you look at it, seperate it and count the pins, on a 1998 car it could be either but more likley to be a 10 pin.

a decent tuning box will work well on the 110 bhp tdi vag unit ,I used to supply and fit speedbuster and believe me you will see a good gain , this method will only adjust fueling so your performance is limited before black smoke stops any increase..

ecu remap is much better as it also increases boost allowing fuel pressures to be tweaked more ..Ive been using the same guy now for the last year to do mine.. this service is nothing to do with me just someone I put my customers in touch with and for vag tdi"s to be remapped he charges me £200 plus mileage and I cant recomend the guy enough, I get around 5 a month done and all my customers have been 100% happy.
drop me a line if you want his number, he is mobile and will come to you..
