Hi guys n girls

My 4.2 V8 S4 cab (54 plate with 50k miles), went into the Audi garage last week as the engine started knocking. They thought it was a flywheel issue and changed it under warranty at the same time offered me to change clutch plate/cover/slave cylinder to save labour in the future which I took. They put everything back together, and guess what...the noise is still there!! I've just been told this morning there is a lot of head scratching going on, as the noise is coming from the bottom end of the engine. I've been warned that its either a partial strip or a brand new engine - all under warranty so ok -

Does anyone here have experience/heard of this before? Im wondering what would have caused it too?

xx

Haven't any experience on that engine, but have had a bottom end failure myself recently (very funny, the car...not me).
Is the knocking present at idle ? does it increase with engine speed ?

mine was fine at idle and then knocked badly at around 3k. Strip down revealed a couple of spun big ends

Yes it is a knocking noise following the the engine noise, so it is at idle and increases with revs. Gets worse if its warmer too....

Mind you, if they decide to give me a new engine under warranty, that has got to be a bonus thing right?

If the warranty is for road use you might want to clean up your PH profile a little.....

hehe the nurburgring is a road !

Does it dissappear when the car is hot... ?
Might be a cracked manifold, although I would have thought they'd have seen that. That will be more of tapping kind of noise though.

Yes that's right. The Ring is a public road. Even the police turn up if there's an accident. Its a unrestricted toll road. Oh, Audi always try their new cars there too - and advertise on billboards in the surrounding areas. I think they would be silly to say their S4/RS4 cars aren't designed for driving fast... who would bother to buy them! My car has always had A1 care and I've had it since new.

Yes the noise is still there when its hot..

Yes its quite a tapping/knocking noise alongside with the revs. Very annoying. At least the sound of the miltech exhaust overwhelsm the knocking noise when accelerating. Surprised I heard it at all in fact ;-)

Wondering if it could be bearings?

Oddly one of our technicians had an S4 in for this type of thing last year...

I'll ask him what it was.

Hi John

Good idea, I might check it now...but Im not going unless I have my S4 back ... was flashed out of the outside lane by a carrera 4S this morning. Was in the 2.0 TDI courtesy car and so couldn't do anything about it....its a very horrible feeling... :-(

Yes please that would be very interesting... Audi still haven't called me...They've had my car for a week now, its really depressing.

Im wondering if it had anything to do with the Camchain slack noise on start up. I asked Audi to sort it out but they said that was normal on those engines and wasn't bad enough to get fixed...something to do with the oil not getting round the camchain quick enough on start up so you here this terrible grinding noise...

Hi!

Audi just called me, they want a £3000 deposit before they work on the car, they're claiming its been remapped and so invalidates the warranty...

Oh shit! thats not good. I wonder if they want the deposit incase it's been caused by the re-map? and if it could'nt have been, then they'll pay? or am I clutching at straws?

mmm...I don't think they want to do the job.

You know I had that cam chain problem on start up which is the same problem you had with your S4 - I wonder if it was this that caused the engine damage/knocking - do you know anyone who would know the answer to this? The camchain problem I had from the first day I bought the car from new.
