A4 NON STARTER

can anyone shed some light on a problem with my a4 ? .. its an 01 2.0 auto , jsut lately its been playing around , sometimes when i go to start it ,.. turn the key and nothing happens ..lock it unlock and still nothing .go back to it anywhere between 10 mins and 2/3 hrs and it starts.......... ive found that if i disconnect the battery for a while it will start as normal , be alright for a while then do the same thing.....all help grtefully recieved.i have been tempted to mend it once and for all with a large hammer
