Hey everyone,

Bit of a dilema and wondered if anyone could point me in the righ direction? Two of my coil packs went on my 1.8T (225 model 02' TT). Got them replaced from Audi by AA chap and seemed to be running fine but have since noticed a loss in power and 'hunting' of the engine when idling together with fluctuations in the temp (not always on exactly 90 degrees). I took it to Audi who gave it a prelim diagnosis on their computer and they told me nothing was wrong, although admitted it was running a litle rough!

Any advice or experience with similar issues? I've also had a small amount of steam coming from the radiator shortly on one occasion but not since...

Many Thanks!!!

As far as the coil packs go, VAG had a bad batch of coil packs for a while. My Oct 2003 R32 had one let go a few weeks ago. VW are replacing them for free even if the car is out of warranty. Rattle a cage or two at your dealers & see if Audi are covering the fault too.

Sorry - can't help you with the other issues. I suggest that you find a good independent service engineer with a few years experience.

What area do you live in?

If coil packs go west, ain't it standard practice to replace 'em all?

Some people do, but VW seem to think that only a few were dodgy scratchchin

The coil packs are only £15 each so that isn't a bad idea really. I just carry a spare one with me & get VW to give me a new each time one goes (once so far).

I had a 2001 225bhp TT that went through coil packs back when the problems first started to happen. At one stage the problem was so bad that Audi ran out of replacements in the U.K. I believe it was a problem for many German maufacturers and just to confirm that I've recently had the same problem with my GT3.
Whether it was connected I can't be sure but I also had problems later with fluctuating tempurature which eventually turned into a cracked turbo housing and head problems resulting in a massive engine rebuild, fortunately paid in part by Audi and part by my company. Apparently the start of the problem was a failing water pump which didn't get spotted inspite of numerous visits to the local dealer. I've since heard that this engine can have waterpump problems in all uses TT, Golf etc.

A very useful bit of info. I'll remember that one thumbup

Plugging in the diagnostic computer doesn't tell you everything! How much is a new water pump? A s**t load less than an engine rebuild!

Best bit about the plug in diagnostic that I kept having done when Audi came out to check it was the Engineer telling me the car could be chipped. Clearly doesn't show up on the computer otherwise he never would have had to tell me about something I'd had since nearly new. Even with the big rebuild nothing was ever mentioned so I assume they were still none the wiser.

Hmm. Be a bit careful - insurance adjusters do have the means for LOOKING for signs of remaps following a warranty claim, accident etc.

Maybe it isn't immediately apparent if they aren't checking the ECU software version. Maybe your engineer was just a bit of a muppet cloud9

Ahhhh gleaming, many thanks for all the advice. Am curious that all these problems seem to have started since the packs went but will definitely get the water pump and turbo housing checked out!!

Fabulous cars - aren't the engines meant to be German and bulletproof? )
