I took a 98 A4 2.8 Quattro out for a drive today and was mightily impressed with handling and ride for a £2k car!!

I really want an Avant but there aren't any in the local area to drive. I'm looking for some feedback from people who have driven both.

Is there a huge amount of difference between the avant and saloon in the handling/ride department? The saloon I drove was tight, felt like the body stiff, had no roll/rattles/squeaks and handled exceptionally well.

We've got a 2.6 Avant. It's ok, rides well, handles competenly though it'll understeer if you throw it about. Nice car. Not a quattro, just fwd here.

I drove both in the same day while ago, although they were a 1.6 and 1.8.

I didn't notice and difference at all, but then the drives weren't for long. The only noticeable difference may be wind noise on the Avant due to the roof bars.
