I have a 99 Sport estate as above. It's done 73K miles. For the last 20K miles sometimes on startup the car will stall before warm - does it only when pulling away not when driving normally.

Yesterday and today the car has lurched a couple of times under acceleration and lost power.. and then it runs OK again.

My VW garage know of the startup issue but cannot find anything on doagnostics and thus cannot solve the issue. Thats never really concerned me but the new problem certainly is a worry. Anyone else experienced this and have any idea what it could be?

Maybe it's time to trade the old girl in for something else but she normally never puts a foot wrong and is probably worth so little that it's cheap motoring and does everything so well!!!

I am having this issue with mine. It's caused by the MAF sensor. It's on it's way out. Soon it will develop a dodgy idle, and a constant reduction (maybe slight but noticable) in power.

Try un clipping the loom from the sensor. It's the only electrical wiring connection coming from the air intake piping. If the symptoms disappear, this is the cause.

** with the MAF disconnected, the ECU will revert to a standard fuelling map and will not perform like usual, but jerkiness should be gone.**

New MAF's can be had for around 40-140, depending on if you want to take a chance on one from fleabay or go to a dealer.

I unplugged the MAF today and the car runs beautifully!! I will now have to arrance for a new one to be fitted.

How long can I run the car without the MAF connected or is that not a good idea?
