1.9 TDI Audi A6
Discussion
The Mrs had an Audi A3 with the 1.9tdi. We had that chipped up to 140hp - made it much more driveable/enjoyable/fun, without sacrificing fuel economy. Engine was extremely reliable (regularly serviced). But the rest of the car wasn't so reliable. (Elec windows, rear wash/wipe, ACC - all had problems).
I've heard reports of VAG Diesel's running forever. I got in a VW Bora Taxi over the weekend, it had done 325k miles and was still going strong. Serviced every 6 months the guy tells me. Also, i know a guy who owns his own cab firm, and he will buy nothing but Skoda TDi's at the moment as they are very very reliable. They have a fleet of 8, all of which are regularly serviced.
I have a Golf Estate (2000), with a miniscule 70k on the clock, and it feels to me like it is just starting to wear in! The engine and gearbox are as smooth as any new car i've driven and the 115 BHP is soon to be chipped to around 150 for £300! I'm a happy motorist!

hmm the particular car i am looking t is a 1 owner A6 sport avant with 170k
Audi SH upto 110k odd, and then the other 60 was done by an indy garage.
The car is up for £7,500
Anything I should look out for on this car?
I am going to take my laptop with VAG com to check the codes, is that a good idea?

Not sure if the seller would like it, but if they have nothing to hide then they shouldn't have a problem.
Just out of interest, did you purchase VAG-COM yourself? Just wondering where i could get hole of a copy so i can reset some of the lights. Get all my work done at an Indy so don't get stuff reset.....
These TDi engines do seem to go on forever. As others have posted; Skoda seem to be flavour of the month with Taxi operators. One of our local guys has just given his old Octavia 1.9TDi to his wife as a daily driver. Bought a new Octavia 2.0TDi/DSG. Dealer offered him next to nothing for his old one - only just over 4 years old but did have 400k+ miles on it - so he kept it. He says no breakdowns etc in all those miles, Just routine servicing and usual consumables.
A6 is one of my favourite cars and I'm sure you'll be pleased with it.

I sell Audis and sell loads of 1.9 tdis A4/A6 etc .. history and condition to me means more than the speeedo reading, I sold one two weeks ago with 220,000 on it , drove no different to the 50,000 miler parked beside it!
I wouldnt be concerned about 170k as long as its reflected in the price!
On the remapping thing that is essential on a vag tdi ! the 5 speed cars respond very well to it and get excellent gains for some reason the 5 speeds are never as good (havent a clue why ! ) autos you have to be careful with the gearbox. most of the cars I sell the customers end up coming back for a remap. but beware getting them turned right up they can spit clutches very quickly!

I've had it two years now and so far very impressed with the build quality so far - still looks feels and drives like new really. And I've spent nothing on it outside of servicing and tyres etc
Not the car I'd buy for spirited driving, but in terms of a value-for-money yet stylish premium car with which to move people and stuff in comfort and safety, its a damn good choice. I like the fact that it's a quailty item and a nice place to spend time on a long drive, with the prestige to turn up anywhere in it, yet not flashy enough to attract unwanted attention.
Its a big car for a 1.9tdi, but like I say, its more of a cruiser. Mine spends most of its life on the motorway and I tend not to stray too far over the speed limit - so 130bhp is fine. 44mpg is good for such a big and well equipped car. The tourque of the engine ensures that there a bit of oomph at mway speeds. But not lots. I've not gone down 'chipping' route yet, but have heard some good stuff and will probably get it done once the car drops out of warranty.
All in all, a fine car.

Jeff, do you mean 6 gear cars don't gain as much? I have a 04 A4 Avant 1.9tdi Q sport 6 speed and am thinking of having it chipped
defo get it done, it should be compulsary on any tdi !!
I get around 6 tdis a month mapped for my customers and drive everyone and both 5 and 6 speed go very well done , yet Ive noticed over the last few years that the 5 speeds in the A6/A4/passat always seem to be a lump more responsive, Weve set them away side by side and the 5speeds are always a fair bit quicker .. its strange as the 6 speeds have a higher torque figure from new ...only explaination I can think of is down to gearing as the 6"s have a closer ratio box .... doesnt effect Golf/A3/bora with the transverse engie/box they go every bit as well and prob better ..
