Motorpoint have brand new Gti's with DSG, 18" Monzas, parking sensors, 6 CD, cruise etc for £18,999. Very tempted. Anyone know of a catch? List is well over £24k for this spec. They're European parallel imports, but does that matter?

I bought my Mrs a Renault from Motorpoint some years ago, got a 1yr Renault factory warranty (instead of 1yr factory + 1 yr dealer), although a local dealer got a bit arsey when I took it to them for warranty work, however I had a body work problem after 2 years and a main dealer didn't even flinch when I took it in and sorted it as if I had bought it from them (bodywork warranty 11yrs - which is brave for a French car maker!).

Renault dealers were not interested in taking it in p'ex for a new car as they said it was somehow 'inferior' being an import (they're made in France and are all imports FFS) but I sold it privately and non-Renault dealers were quite happy to offer on it.

AFAIK they're all made to the same standard in the same factory (regardless of what the dealer will tell you) so if it's what you want and the price is right then go for it.

I'd do it again if the right car/deal was available, just don't expect any sort of 'treatment' at Motorpoint other than 'do you want it then or what?'

BTW did I mention that I saved £2,500 over Renault dealers price.......

Well the thing is I've had a few cars from Motorpoint, but the percentage saving on this one is the highest by quite a bit, and it's more 'desirable' than some of the others I've had - and that's making me a bit wary.

But 20%+ saving seems a lot without a catch.

Make sure they're UK cars. When you plan to seell , you will take a hit on it.

A guy at work discovered his BMW was not a uk car, none too pleased with them.

I don't think they sell many UK cars, they are imports purchased in volume, hence the savings. Motorpoint will tell you the origin of each if you ask.

Hello

I bought my Golf GTI from Motorpoint in March this year and the service was excellent - no frills, but excellent.

My car is a euro import (all their new golfs are AFAIK) but the bonus of this is it comes with several items as std spec which are optional extras on a UK car (Multi Function Steering Wheel, Cruise Control, Carpet Mats)

As for re-sale - it says nowhere on my V5 that my car is an import, so how would anyone buying it off me 2nd hand know?!?!?!

Bad points...
User manual/service book are in belgian (flemish?) so will need to buy new ones from vw if selling the car
Stereo was lower spec than a UK car (no rear speakers and only a 2-way system in the front where UK gti's have a 3-way I think) but I'm replacing with aftermarket anyway so don't care about this.

It's your choice, but I'd buy from them again no probs!

What about warranty? They seemed non-comital on warranty period when I spoke to them.

I beleive there is a some kind of code either on the vin or somewhere else that indicates its destination. Im sure its the case with Porsche but would imagine most are the same.

And the only people who are interested are VW dealers trying to 'protect' their market.

Is a car destined for the Belgian (or wherever) market somehow inferior to a UK one? The Renault my wife had was an 'Import' (it was made in France) and the only people who cared were UK Renault dealers, I sold it privately for the same price as any other comparable car but I saved £2.5k when I bought it.

I also have an 'Imported' Motorbike with which I have seen no 'prejudice' whatsoever from dealers and would not expect that it is worth any less than a a 'UK' model - no-one can convince me that Ducati sell an inferior product to their home market than the UK and I saved £2,250 on the dealer price.

If the car is a good deal then personally I'd get it, the only drawback regarding resale is if you want to trade-in to a VW dealer within the first 2/3 years afterwards it's just another old car and to any private buyer it's just another VW.

And they're all 'Imports' anyway.........rolleyes
