Mates Turbo Exploded - Help Needed

Howdo chaps

Im a new comer to the VW section, but I have been asked by a friend of mine for some help and the first people I can think of is the PH massive

My mate has a VW Golf GTTDi 130 o na 2002 plate and has just had the misfortune of his turbo exploding on his way home t'other day

Now from what he tells me it began smoking a little, but he wasnt worried so he gave it a bit of gas and it vanished, then when he backed off a little (not on overrun) the smoke reappeared and from then on things went nipples north very quickly.

Long story short, the car had to be ditched in some bushes on this country lane so not to cause a problem for anyone else

Now hes asked me if I know anyone that can source a turbo for less than what VAG are asking which is around a bag-o-sand

The best quote hes had for the unit is £600 without fitting

So I ask of you fine chaps, does anyone have any help they can offer or advice???????

The Turbo is a garrett unit, the only numbers he could find were 720855-1/5N

If you don't mind used then try classifieds on uk-mkivs.net. Saw one in there a month or so back for not much money.

BTW, I've got a PD130 as well. What sort of mileage/use did it let go at?

Im not sure what mileage is on the Golf when she let go...I could hazard a guess but the likelyhood is I would be miles out if you pardon the pun!

Im having a word with my mate tomorrow as he was supposed to get back to me with a model number and didnt so I'll ask him then...I assume its under 100k

Theres a common problem with the VATN turbo's seizing the VTAN parts, overspools the turbos & blows them up. Might well have been the cause?
