I've just bought an A6 Avant 2.7T Quattro Sport, and very nice it is too!

Only problem is the suspension is a bit on firm side, is there anyway of softening it up? Very un-PH I know.

I've looked at replacing the 17" wheels with 16" but I think that softer springs and dampers may be the way to go.

Any ideas?

Springs are often upgraded. You'll find it difficult to downgrade unless you get an original set from a lower model. Then, you would probably just upset the handling.
The easiest most reversible route is to either, as you say get 16's with a higher profile to match the rolling radius of your 17's, or get a slightly higher profile on your wheels. This will affect the speedo reading, which you will need to factor in when going past cameras(as you will be going faster than the speedo reads)

I downgraded the wheels to 16" with Michelin Primacy tyres 215/55.

They don't look as good as the 17" but the ride has lost it's hard edge and is fine now.

There is also slightly less road noise.
