A4 Engine Management / Fault Codes

1.9 TDI Avant 130
Engine management light has pinged on for no apparent reason, car is running fine, in fact, if I were honest, I would say it feels better than usual!! It's been smoking a lot (ah the wonders of Diesel) recently, but now actually seems to be less! The car certainly isn't in limp home mode.
Anyway, I should be able to get it to a dealer later in the week - but until then I need to drive places, so is this a complete no-no and I should not drive it at all, or given the car is running ok, should I just take care to not get too heavy footed?
I tried reading the fault codes through the aircon but this did not work - in fact, it did nothing, and even trying the manual suggested celsius to faranheit change didn't work - so I assume this feature isn't available on my car.
Any experiences, feedback or views are welcomed
