Just a quick hello from a newbie here before I get down to business.
I've been lingering for a little while due to my interest in cars and have just joined the forum as you seem a helpful bunch of chaps and I'm looking for a little advice.

A bit of an introduction, my name is Steve, i'm 25 and live just outside Newcastle. My background on cars is mainly with kitcars having owned a Westfield in the past and about to take possesion of a new one next month.

Now for the reason for posting in the Audi section, I've just been given an 1985 Audi Quattro (lucky me!!), it belongs to one of the bosses at work and he's just got an new A6 Quattro so doesn't have much time for the old girl. He said it runs (it was his everyday car until Christmas) but may need a bit of work doing to it. The last time I saw it at work it looked a little rough around the edges from a distance. Now I'm a bit of an Audi virgin so bare with me but I believe it's the 2.1l 10 valve WR model from my research on the internet.

This car is on my 'must own one of these in my lifetime' list so I don't mind spending a bit of money taking it to pieces and bringing it back to it's former glory. I will be doing most of the work myself as being and engineer (albeit electrical) i don't mind getting my hands dirty.

Now for the questions.
I've heard some parts for these cars can be a little difficult to source. If anyone has a list of the parts which may be difficult to source that would be a great help to start?

Do they share any parts (engine/gearbox/4wd system for example) with other audi models of the 80's which may help me in replacing any broken bits?

Have any of you taken on the task of rebuilding one at home or have you ever worked with them? if so do you have any tips and if you don't mind I may need to speak to you some time over the coming months?

Does anybody know of any online sources or books which have any information on working on these cars or just information in general about them which may be useful? A Haynes type manual would be a ideal but from looking on their website they don't do one.

Thats all I can think of now, but will no doubt be back next week with more questions when I pick the car up. I'll even post some photos for you to have a look at.

Many thanks in advance,
Steve
