1991 gti mk2 golf,original 62 k on the clock.
Started blowing water through the exhaust and pressurising the expansion tank causing it to overflow before the fans cut in.
Check this out,
1.replaced the metal coolant pipe, rusting and pinholed.
2.removed radiator and thoroughly flushed through and reversed flushed.
3.rad cleaner added and complete system flushed through.
4.Replaced thermostat.
5.water pump replaced
6.expansion tank replaced.
7.removed cylinder head, water in 2 middle pistons.Head skimmed and pressure tested ok
8.all water ways thoroughly cleaned, flushed etc.
9.level checked block,ok
10.New genuine vw headgasket, bolts etc fitted
11.All sensors and fan thermo switch replaced
12.oil pressure switch replaced
13.instrument cluster replaced
14.assembled and tested engine,everything ok
15.ran engine again,it hasen't even done 5 miles
16.Blowing water from the exhaust and smoking.like on a cold morning when you see the cars in traffic, water level rises in expanson tank, starts to overflow, fans cut in and level drops.
I am really gutted after all the work i've put in,any further advice in which direction to go would be much appreciated.
Thanks

I did very similar on my sons GTi about 3 years ago and found the head was pourous, needed a new (secondhand) one

Wow,

Your car problems continue.

Porous sounds a good thing to check next...

Aside from something you've done having gone wrong already..

Like 'head gasket, or maybe a crack in the 'head itself allowing water to leak?

Check those two next!

Hi,
The head was skimmed and pressure tested at the same time.If a problem did exist eg porsity i am sure the shop would have brought that to my attention.
I spoke to a radiator specialist today and he told me that the golf's were fitted with flow restrictors in the rad,if these were partially blocked that would cause the problem. When i reversed flushed the rad earlier he reckons it needs to be pressurised.
Considering removing the rad again and letting him do a proper flow test.
What do you reckon?
Cheers

Could be a crack in the head which only shows/appears when you get the head warm, i.e. expanding

I know this is slightly OT but I had overheating problems that were cured with a new rad. Are you sure the rad is not completely or nearly completely blocked?

Just a thought?

Cheers,

Steve.
