OK, I recently bought a 2004 V10 5.0 TDi Phaeton (fcensoredg awesome car for the money by the way, horrendous depreciation has made these a steal) and I've got some questions about the on-board PC/satnav since the dealers I have spoken to so far have basically said, "You've got a Pha-what?" rolleyes

Basically, I want to:

1) Update the satnav to 2006 without paying VW's outrageous prices. I understand the system to be based on the VDO Dayton, and that it can take Teleatlas CDs, does anyone know the specifics of which one I need to look out for?

2) Can you upgrade the firmware of the on-board PC? Specifically I would quite like to be able to play MP3s in the car, and since I have a fully functional computer with CD drive attached, it shuold be completely trivial to implement in firmware, so I guess my question would be, has it?

Thanks!

I'll have a go then...

1) Discs for the sat nav - had a quick search and several listings via ebay state:

The compatibility exists to following original fitted equipment:
VDO Dayton Systems (MS 3xxx, MS 4xxx, MS 5xxx, MS 6xxx) (not for C-IQ devices)
PHILIPS CARiN Systems (CARiN 420, CARiN 440, CARiN 510, CARiN 520, CARiN 522),
BMW und Mini (3er, 5er, 7er, Xer, Mini),(except E60, E61, E63,E64 and E90)
Citroen C5 (with big colour screen - until 2003/06),
Peugeot (607 with VDO systems - big colour screen),(not for systems RT3 - fitted from 2004)
Land Rover (Range Rover, Discovery, Freelander)
Ford (Lincoln)
Opel / Vauxhall (until 2000/06 - Astra, Corsa, Omega, Vectra, Zafira)(with CARiN systems)
Renault (Carminat Navigations systems - with big colour screen),(except Carminat 8000 and Harmann/Becker)
Rover 75
MG ZT
Volkswagen (Phaeton)

You can then go to:

www.vdodayton-shop.com/start.aspx?action=Category&CategoryID=18&ShowLand=1

and get a new original disc.

All IMHO, no warranty given nor implied

2) With regards to the firmware update. I'd speak to several dealers to check, as whilst it may be "possible" it depends whether the software has actually been written by VW!

Have you checked to see that it doesn't play MP3 discs as standard. I was reading my Golf handbook, and in some markets the CD player will play MP3's as standard.

If it's optional on a Golf, it may be standard on the flagship...

Thanks Chris, much appreciated! I have tried an MP3 CD in the car and it didn't do anything (apart from complain it was a CD-ROM not an audio CD), so I'm guessing it's not supported as standard, unless I have to do something odd to get it to work.

Thanks for the link to VDO Dayton though, it's certainly a good starting point!
