My trusty Passat has sprung an oil leak.

Whilst it is not the end of the world as it is only losing about 500ml every 1500 miles, it's still making the drive a bit messy.

I've traced the leak to a small crack (that will only get bigger natch') in the sump by the sump plug. These engines are installed longditudinally as in the Audi A4, and not in common with the rest of the Vee Dub range.

Looks a pain to change with the engine in place due to the gearbox and X members. Anyone know whether it could be repaired on the car (and know someone who could do it), or how hard it is to replace the sump on these cars .... I'd like to avoid whipping the motor out if I can.

Are you able to drop the subframe enough to gain the clearance to get the sump off, i have done this on other Audis before , but never worked on the A4 underneath.

Do you have a workshop manual for it?

I haven't taken too much attention as yet, but I believe that the lower arms may be attached to it also.

I haven't got a workshop manual unfortunately. Was going to wait for a dry and warmish weekend and improvise if I can get the sump on it's own as a part from a breakers.

When did you last have the oil changed and who did it?

Was it leaking before the last oil change?

Before I bought it, and no idea who did it.

Someones had a go at bodge repairing the leak at some point with a bit of GRP resin .... cow boys!
