I have the standard single disc CD in my 06 golf GTI at moment - has anyone changed to a built in sat nav system / audio system. The VW colour nav system seems expensive at about £1500! You thoughts appreciated..

I have an 05 GTi and spec'd the VW satnav from the factory. It is certainly expensive but (in limited mitigation) includes a 6 disc changer, arm rest and rear air vents. I don't know whether this would be true of a dealer fitted system.

I justified the cost on the grounds that, apart from needing sat nav, it makes the dash look infinitely better. The system actually works very well, though the graphics are a bit basic. In contrast, the flashy touchscreen 3D system that we had in a 2006 Discovery did not work nearly as well and was prone to crashing and bogus route information.

I am still amazed that the abundance of good portable sat nav systems (Tomtom, Garmin etc.) has not forced the price of OEM systems down. In spite of this, I have spec'd factory satnav in an S3 which arrives in June. Again part of my motivation for shelling out the ludicrous £2k is the way it makes the interior look. Vanity is costly!

By the way, there is a Satnav forum on PH so you might get good info there.

You can do the OEM yourself, I believe it cost about £800.

Thanks for the responses - took the plunge and got a MFD2 for £420 off of fleabay - list price from VW is £1250. Now just have to find some spare time for fitting!
