Have booked my Mk5 Golf TDI (105) in for a service on Thursdya. It's the cars second service(now have 37K on the clock) but the first since I owned.

Anyone have an idea of how much I should be looking at the service costing ?

I will give you an idea. Here is a quote from a main dealer for a MK3 1.9D golf I received yesterday.

40k Service £261.20 [Oil, fuel, pollen, air filter and oil]
MOT £59.16
Cam Belt £409.07 (Kit includes tensioner)
Exhaust dp £535.00 (supply only and includes the Catalyst)

All the above is inclusive of fitting and VAT. I might get it washed for free too!!! Yippee.

Paid £376 for similar for my MkIV before I wised up and went independent.

Word of warning, the dealer who did mine @42K told me my brakes had less than 10K to go and needed replacing. At 93K they are still on the car and working fine!

Cheers,

Whoa, I was expecting about £200 tops!

Will have to wait and see now I guess..........nothing wrong with it (that I know of anyway) plus it's under warranty so anything out of the ordinary should be covered.....think it does need new wiper blades though but hopefully that won't break the bank.

Well service was done today (it was a major one as I suspected) at £283, plsu I had wipers changed, and brake fluid changed since it was 2 years old so all in came to just un der £350, a lot more than I was expecting but consdiering it only needs servicing every 18,000 not bad I guess....

Servicing for modern cars is way to expensive generally. The work is straightforward and you are mostly paying for the shiny chrome and glass "customer experience" showroom.

I am a "family man" now so using an non-dealer just about stacks up on the time vs. money argument, otherwise I'd go back to DIY (the bits are quite reasonable).

Your next service will be cambelt. I'd start looking for a good independent well in advance as you will not want to pay dealer money for this.

Thanks for the tip Adrian although the next one will not be due for about 18,000 miles and as this is the second car that will be 2 years away fortunately.
