Mk V Golf GTi steering noise......?

Hello, not been over here on the VW/Audi section much but; my partner has a Mk V Golf GTi, 18 months old, 10k miles and it has a kind of 'graunchy' noise when steering left at very low, manoeuvring type speeds. I think it has always done it but it may be getting a bit worse. I mentioned it at the dealers at service time, at first they reckoned they couldn't hear it then, when it was pointed out, they reckoned 'they all do that'. My mate has just bought a 3k mile model and his does it slightly.

Is it a known problem and is there a warranty fix for it?

We both absolutely love the car, I reckon it's about the best all-round 'real world' car on the market at around the £20k mark, perfect balance of performane/practicality and useability, it even does 30mpg!

known issue on some cars, dealers should be able to check serial number and replace under warranty if required.
