My A6 2.5 tdi is blowing blue smoke all over the place underload and at idle. Took the intake pipework off yesterday to have a wee look, there was oil in the inlet side of the turbo. Not much, just a tiny amount. Was thinking it might be an Oil seal that was away on the turbo, it still spools up when the car is driven, but i'm choking everybody behind me with blue smoke.

Any idea how much it would cost to overhaul the turbo? I'm not keen on doing myself as last time i took a turbo out it took bloody ages to get it back in and working again properly.

Could it be anything else other than the turbo? Also, don't suppose anybody knows what model of turbo it is, i know its a Garrett but can't make out any of the other markings on it to have a look at a replacement.

Cheers thumbup

Does it have the EGR system on it, i assume it does, this recycle exhaust gases into the engine to lower the emmissions. That might be where the oil is coming from. Dont always assume the turbo has died

What age is the car? if its under 8 years old it will have an Exhaust Gas Recycle System, where all crankcase gases are returned to the inlet side of the engine system and reburnt, it keeps emissions down, apparently.

I have a Mk 4 GTi TDi 150 and it has the same/similar system, the inlet side of that gets oily at times.

If it's turbo trouble, you probably want to talk to turbo technics.
They pretty much wrote the book!

Refurbed my turbos for me when I had a bit of trouble last year.
Before...

After, with new bearings and seals

Its a 98 R. My guess at turbo was because of the oil in the inlet housing, plus evidence of oil around the turbo and on the turbo heat shield, and of course the plumes of blue smoke obsuring my rearward vision. Its only recently started doing it as well

Dont always assume the worst/most expensive fix before you eliminate the easy/cheaper ones first, its very easy to dive in and say "turbo is buggered" and watch big bucks go down the drain to find you still have the same problem afterwards. Get it diagnosed properly first then go for the fix.

Its like having a dodgy electrical fuse in a drill, then automatically assume its crap wiring in the house, get the whole house rewired (spend a small fortune doing it) then find when you plug the drill in again, whoops, you still have the same problem

Had it in the garage to let them have a look at it. Not the turbo, though he did say it was understandable why i thought that. Its a breather filter for the turbo that was due to be changed along with the cambelt at 80k, audi main dealer never bother their arse to change it. Still a little expensive to fix but not as bad at the turbo, though if it had been left much longer then it might have knackered the turbo in the long run. Fingers crossed it should fix the blue smoke and burning oil problem and bring it back to good health. Getting a whole load of other stuff done as well while its in there, hopefully won't break the bank but not holding my breath on it being cheap!

"Breather filter for the Turbo"!!!!! Is that what your man told you, ask him to show you exactly what that is.

The turbo doesnt have a " breather filter", does he mean the normal air filter, thats not much to change.

Do you have a flag on your head, similar to my wife, everytime she takes her car to the garage they try to fleece her, im sure she has this flag that says, "im loaded fleece me"

Im not having go at you, but it seems he might be taking you for a little ride

No flag, i know where it is, just the whole injections system needs to come out to get to it. Theres a filter at the bottom of the V that has something to do with the turbo, 4 different garages have said the same thing, its the best way i could think of to describe it. Its not the normal air filter, not entirely sure what it does, but it is there
