Hello im interested in buying this but dont know a great deal about them can anyone shed any ligh on it. ive fannced an s2 for ages and this just looks like its cousin cheers robson www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/140073.htm
That's very cheap.
It's an early model, so has the UFO brakes which aren't the best, but fine for normal road use.
Pretty much all the same advice applies to these as to the S2 really.
Should've had at leat 2 cambelts and 10 services (ideally 17 or so given its mileage) in its lifetime.
At 170k and with those wheels expect the suspension to be comprehensively shagged.
If the wastegate cap is missing then walk away, there's no reason to remove it other than to wind the boost up. Mine had this done before i bought it and it was nothing but trouble as a result.
Check the MPG, if it's under 20 in gentle driving then you've got a boost leak.
The boost hoses are crap on these and cost a fortune to replace (Audi want getting on for £600 for all 3, with a 14 day wait for delivery).
The boost gague on the dash should peak at 2.2 in overboost mode.
If it's not getting near 2.0 then something's up, likewise if it's going over.
If the engine's cold it's an easy job to check for play in the turbo.
Make sure the afterrrun system works (fan and elec coolant pump should run after shutoff when the engine's hot).
Get a wheel alignment done, it'll transform the car.
If you're serious and it's a long term purchase, then get it inspected by Phil Payne from www.isham-research.co.uk/quattro , strange bloke but the best person to have looking at cars for you, should charge about £200 for an S4 inspection.
Don't expect it to be cheap to run just because it's chep to buy. Mine cost me nearly £2k in maintenance over 10 months.
