It has to be a 3.0 if you only have £20K. My budget was £26k decided on a S4 rather than a M3. For £20k it will be a high miler M3 conv unless you are after an E36

Yep you can get an S4 cab... sounds like a good call to me! thumbup

Here's an example - www.pistonheads.com/sales/136109.htm (not sure how old they go so it might be a struggle for £25k)

I paid £26 000 for my July 04 cab in october fantastic car (bought it to replace my Chimaera 500 and wifes SLK) thought about an M3 but love the torque and flexibility of the S4. If you can afford it go for the S4 I think the 3.0 will feel underpowered.

Is it's primary role going to be a poser car, or a drivers car? I guess a mix of the two given that you are after a cabriolet.

If you value your driving experience at all, forget the Audi and go for the M3. It's a fine car, with excellent handling, and a glorious engine. The Audi IMO has only the first of those attributes.

IYO as you say, the chain driven 4.2 V8 is one of the best production engines out there and doesn't sound like a bag of bolts like the BMW straight six when coupled to an M3 exhaust. So the only thing the S4 falls down on is handling and its weight, but I'd rather have quattro given our quaint island's typical weather than a RWD.

As to answer the original question, S4's can be had for sub £25K but you are heading into prime cabrio season, some bargains will still be there to be had. The cab that holds it's value best at the moment however is the 3.0TDi. Oodles of torque, just about as much as an S4 and if remapped a lot more. Off the line it may not be as quick as an S4 but in gear it is, just hard to find one for your price bracket. If you do plump for a 3.0 petrol don't drive the S4 cab because it will leave you feeling short changed when you do plump for your 3.0 petrol.

Hi

I sell Audis, and the odd Porsche and BMW, and a mate has had a succession of M3s, so I know a bit about these..

Please DO NOT buy a 3.0i V6 cabriolet - or that engine in any A4!! It sucks!

It's very lethergic, won't rev like a BMW 3.0 straight 6, and guzzles fuel.

Get a 1.8T as it's just as much fun as a 3.0, If you can stretch for it get an S4 as it truly is a great car, but a 2.5TDi or 3.0TDi quattro of the new generation is our best seller.

Bear in mind the Cabriolet is a heavy car, so a 1.8T, 2.4 V6 or 3.0 V6 are all doing a lot to pull the thing along!!

The TDi models with the relatively high torque characteristics at low revs make a similar driving experience to the V8 in the S4, but with some economy (30 - 40mpg).

Trust me an S4 4.2 will do around 18 - 20mpg!!

Ouch.

Interesting what you say on the mpg quotes, most 3.0TDi driver I know only get between 25 and 30mpg and I'm getting a calculated 22mpg average in the S4 (24.1 on DIS) and I do have a rather heavy right foot.

If I had a choice in an A4 cab, if running costs were an issue it would be the 3.0TDi and not the 2.5 because it's not particulalry frugal either and low torque in comparison, otherwise the S4.

If that's the case you should be teaching us all to drive!!!

S4 and a heavy right foot - 22 - 24 mpg?

Driven with a heavy right foot an S4 would do 10 - 15mpg!!

I know - I've had them!!

Even an allroad TDi quattro tiptronic (much heavier car) will do around 31mpg average, so lighter Cabriolet will do 30 - 40 mpg for you. Naturally less if you hoof it everywhere.

My S4 will do a lot less and I've even got it down to 5mpg, but for the last 5000 or so miles on DIS 2 it comes out at 24.1 and worked out on petrol costs and fill up about 22. That's my five day a week commute and thrashing around the local highways at the weekend when wife and baby are not onboard.

I realise peoples experiences of S4's vary, I know people who have them that gat the same as you yet I know S4 owners who regulerly get 27-29mpg. Go figure.

S/S exhaust and remap hgave certainly helped the economuy of late plus running on V-Power

That's true - mine was remapped with K04s, walbro fuel pump and RS4 fuel rails and airbox, K & N cone fiter, and had Miltek full dual branch zorst with race cats and when my wife drove it it did indeed do 30mpg...

But that's a "driving miss daisy" pace...

If you were really "on - it" it did 3mpg! Average was 18.

But 400 hp ain't cheap!
