A3 1.8T buying advice
Discussion
Folks,
Ive seen a 1.8T on a '00 V plate in a local garage. Its got full service history, main dealer and specialist every year until last summer. Its only got 40k on the clock. Not test driven it yet but wondered what you thought about a car 6 years old with only 40k on. Had a change of owner in 2002 and thats it. Its in Java Green. Asking £5495 for it

Driven it today - plenty power and no unusual knocks. Rear discs are shot but the dealer said he would replace them
The computer in the centre of the clocks seems to have lines which cut across it - it got better as it was driven until it was nearly a perfect display. Is this a common problem?

Hi mate, doesn't look as if anyone's about eh?? Lol
It's a nice car. Had mine two years. Got the T Sport. 150bhp was good enough for about 18months, then had to have a remap to give it the power it should have had from the factory.
Common faults are:-
MAF sensor failing: will feel sluggish, odd flatspots in acceleration, dodgy idle. (EASY FIX)
Coolant temperature sensor: hesitant when engine cold, not starting, odd coolant warnings, jerky ride. (EASY FIX)
Thermostat broken: temp on dash only going to 70-80 degrees. (EASY FIX)
Waterpump failing (made of crappy plastic): temp shoots right up after 10 mins of normal driving (cambelt off job) *** Ask the dealer if cambelt has been done, AND if the water pump was changed with it. If either not done tell him you'll have £500 off the price to get it sorted. Then DIY it!! (I did and I'd only done an oil change previously) ***
Brake light switch fails: brake lights not working (EASY FIX)

ETA on the wiper stalk, there should be a button you can toggle up and down. Flick through these and show current mpg. It changes all the time, for engine speed, load etc. It shouldn't go below 20mpg (instantaneous) unless you're giving it the beans!

Hi Rob,
I ran an A3 1.8T on a 51 plate and thought it a good car - solid and quite quick. Only had it for a year or so no real exprience re running costs though.
You mentioned lines across the Driver Info Display. I've read about the DIS failing on Audi's and it seems to be a bit of a sore point. Being out of warranty you'll be looking at stumping up if you want the fault fixed, and it's a full-on dash off exercise = £££. If not, you may notice is getting worse. Depends if you can live with it really.
Maybe worth using it as a big haggling point - dealers know how much this costs to put right, or maybe shop around? There are plenty about.
They are well built and personally I wouldn't mind taking a car of that year with higher milage so long as history is intact and condition is A1.
Just my opinion though

Thanks for the replies guys.
My issue with the car was that its very low mileage and looking at service book only driven between 5k and 8k a year. The car itself looks very honest and everything is with it in the audi pack and all keys are present.
Maybe im getting pulled in by the colour as it is the very unusual Jade Green. Looks great with the dark contrasting interior
