Hey guys,

Have currently done 12500 miles, most of which have been quite hard (lots of extended 155mph runs in germany and a few days on the ring) and have booked the car in for an oil change. The woman i spoke to thought the car didnt need it as it has "long life" oil, but seeing as the oil hasnt been changed since new, i still feel its prudent, or am i being silly?

Also i enquired about the extended warranty, which is fine, however they must perform a check over of the car. Which is understandable, what i would like to know is, if they find anything wrong wont they have to replace this under my current warranty.

Thanks very much,

best
adam

The R32 engine has an oil condition sensor in it's sump, which I assume must alert you in some way when it feels the oil is due for replenishment? Dashboard light maybe?

Personally I don't trust them and prefer to do my own changes at earlier intervals than specified. There's no such thing as 'long life' oil. It's just cynical marketing. Car makers view long service intervals as being more attractive to customers, which helps sell their cars. Engines these days can take a lot of abuse and oil quality is brilliant, but there's no escaping the fact that when it's choked with carbon, it's choked with carbon.....'long life' or not, it needs replacing.

If you're planning on keeping the car a while, or if it was a private purchase, then I would be changing that oil ASAP and with something better, like Castrol Edge 10W/60 for example.

Firstly good to see that its going well even with high abuse. I've just bought my new R32 got about 350 miles on it so far and I'm pretty hard on my cars.

Anyway about the oil personally in my experience Mobil 1 is the best oil to use. I've been fortunate enough to speak at length to a very experienced engine builder who builds race specific Porsches for a no. of world teams. He told me engines running Mobil 1 always came back in the best condition when he stripped them down (he has no connection with them and advised me to go to Halfords) I have used it ever since in my cars and they have always run cleanly and quietly. I'm very happy with it.

p.s. Did your engine get any better with some hard miles on it? I heard they run the engines for 5000miles in the factory but mine still feels and sounds a bit tight, too eager to decelerate and not eager enough to rev!

I've also got about 400 miles on my new R32, had Chimera / Tuscan S and M3 before this but very pleased with its ability. Whether or not the engine is still loosening up I can't tell but good all round car and still gets some looks on the street.

We got ours with 13,000kms on it, so cant say if it loosened up.

But EVO have an R32 long termer, and he likes it

I just want to say, that i absolutely love this car. As an everyday "normal" car, it cannot be beaten. It does everything so damned well.

Heres to happy R32 motoring!

the chemical components of long life oil are a lot different to normal engine oils that are avalible on the market the propertys of the oil are designed in theroy designed to last a lot longer, long life oil when you look at it is in fact a green colour its not just the rating of the oil (eg 0w30) its all the other numbers you need to check (eg aci 3)etc, putting in a different type of oil will invalidate your waranty (eg dealer parts only) also the cars electric senors are set up to mesure long life oil and if the wrong oil is used it might bring the oil quality light on earlier, you can have it swicthed off long life at the dearler and put on to normal annual milage dependant servicing but its always best to change the oil every year or if you think its been driven a bit hard rather than wait till a service light comes on even though that would be ok, longlife oil is avalible over the counter but it is dear and if you can find a cheaper oil make sure its compatible last thing you want is damage on a r32 engine, just remember this long life oil has been specificaly designed for vw audi cars with years of research it is a very good oil and your find it hard to find an oil as good

Further to the above comments I have to say WOW can’t agree more. When I first took the new R32 for a test drive 6months ago I was really disappointed and preferred the GTi. The choice to buy an R32 came because it was more financially sensible with the higher re-sale values but having now had some time to get to know the car I have to say I would never swap it for any other hot hatch!

Compared to the Gti and the new Audi S3 it just has so much more character and the brakes are WAY superior! Only thing I don't like is the front wheel power and weight bias makes it under steer in the wet!
