I'm currently in a position where I am choosing between a Leon 2.0TDI Sport on a 06 plate - or a 2.0TDI Sport with DSG on a 56 plate.

Money etc aside....is DSG worth the extra £500 or so that it adds to the value? What are the benefits and drawbacks?

Having driven an R32 with the DSG box, I'd have to say YES!!!

The box is fantastic, slamming cogs in when you need it to or sliding them gently in without you noticing when you're in chauffeur mode..

Great gearbox IMHO..

Yes! The TDI has a very narrow powerband and its always change gear change gear change gear. DSG does away with that.

DSG is a joy - both in the city and on the coutry roads.

If you do many miles a year and buy the car for practical reasons, you should go for the DSG.
If you buy the car as a hobby and wants to go racing in the weekends, go for the manual. (if thats the case I guess you wouldn´t even consider a diesel in the first place )

I drive 30.000 miles a year and would not change mine for a manual.

Only one sure way to find out wats suits you: Have a testdrive in both cars driving

Well I did drive an Audi A3 a couple of weeks back with the "multitronic" gearbox (still with flappy paddles). Is this basically the same as DSG or is it a much quicker system than the Audi's?

I'd ask over on the Audi forum, but I thought Multitronic was CVT with fake ratios added in. Audi now call the DSG box S Tronic btw.

FYI, I just put down deposit on a non DSG 2.0TDI Sport. After talking to the dealer, the DSG cars were a little bit too dear, so instead I spunked the left over cash on some extras..
