Last year the drivers side front coil spring broke on my wife's A2 (2002, currently at 40k miles, owned by wife from new) and we were then relieved of £311 to repair what must surely have been a dodgy spring in the first place. At the time I wondered if it was a dodgy batch of springs and would the others be ok. My fears were realised this morning when the passenger side spring broke.

Has anybody else had problems with Audi (especially A2) coil springs breaking?

We've already told the Audi dealer we expect Audi pay for the repair this time - what do you think the chances are?

Cheers,
Martin

I had a rear coil spring break on my polo recently which I was suprised about since it has only done 20,000 miles! It 'only' cost £130 to fix though.

When I asked for an explanation why it happened the VW dealer said it was due to wear and tear. I thought these things lasted for at least 100,000 miles+.

Are there two people using your profile to post? Sometimes your replies are really helpful and other times you're just a weapons grade cockend (like this time).

Not sure, but I'll post back next week. Ours in in for cambelt change, and also to investigate the loud knocking at the front. Suspicion is ARB bushes, which are bonded to the ARB, so complete ARB replacement if thats the case.

Whatever, I blame the speed hump around the corner, which has cratered badly; our poor A2 just about tips over its nose as the front wheel drop into the craters.

On the smart fortwo there are a range of cars that have had spring breakages. Apparently the coating was removed during assembly and they've rusted through. smart are finally (after 3yrs of people complaining) paying for them to be done.

Maybe contact VOSA and see if they have any reports of them going on the A2? Did the dealer seem surprised it had snapped?

Many thanks for the offer, but all sorted now (and hopefully won't need another spring changing...)

Got the car back today. Audi agreed to pay for half, so I guess not a bad result. Also the bill only came to around a third of what I was told the cost was going to be - can only guess that the labour was charged at the rate Audi would pay the dealer for warranty work.

When I spoke to the service manager on Monday he said he'd never had to change a spring on an A2 before (apart from the previous one on this car) and he'd never known a spring go on a car of anything like this age/mileage. Though when my wife picked the car up they came out with some cobblers about speed bumps...

Sadly I know we've got one customer who's A2 1.4 keeps breaking springs...

Audi don't want to know, and it's one of those frustrating circumstances where we honestly don't know what is different about it.

Our other customer's A2s are fine.

Ours was the ARB bushes, they had parted company with the ARB completely. New ARB fitted with improved design (metal stop instead of relying on bonded rubber for lateral location). Car is transformed, it had suspension again!
