Golf 3 for free (take it or leave it?)
Discussion
hey,
my girlfriend wants to learn to drive... she also needs a cheap, decent car that won't cost her too much...
A great-aunt of mine past away last year and now I can get a Golf 3 1.4 for free, if I want. It's a twelve year old model with some 60.000 km's (+-37.500 miles) and has been serviced on a regular basis (at first depending on mileage, later on once a year) by an official dealer. It is also a ‘boston-’version, hence the white indicators and sporty seats…
The problem is that the car has never been garaged and that it hasn't driven much the last years. On the inside it looks (and smells) as new, but on the outside it has a few dents... that aren't repared that well. The brakes show some rust, but I reckon they will be cleaned if the cars driven for a while. (is this correct?)
Can anyone give some advise on this car. As a long-time VW-Audi-Porsche fan I recon a Golf the ideal first car for my girlfriend. But does the fact that it's free outweigh the weaknesses of this car? Is it expensive to repair, run, insure and service?
Mind you, it will mostly be driven by an inexperienced female driver in her twenties... (sry dear ;-)
Any advice is more than welcome, grtz!

If she is a first time driver, then a cheap car with some already present knocks mean that when (not if) the next knock comes along, you just wont care.
Additionally, they are tough as old hob nail boots, my GTI is still going, after two hefty smacks that by rights should have written her off.
Add to that, its free. If someone offered me a free running and serviced regularly car, I'd bite their hand off!
