Now the Touareg has gone, I'm looking for a company car to use when I'm not using the Night Rod.

Looking at both of these (both ex demonstrators) at the moment and the differnce in BIK taxwise isn't significant.

The question is which one to go for.

The GTI seems to have a higher spec but has anyone driven both much and formed an opinion please?

Planning to get the DSG version because it'll be better in the heavy traffic instances.

Am I wrong and which would you go for?

I have owned both of these, I bought a GT TDI (140) when the MK5 first came out and kept it until the GTI was launched. Both were good cars but if running costs/tax etc are not an issue I would definitely go for the GTI. It is a lot more rewarding than the GT TDI, it has a better spec, the seats and interior are better, it looks better and the performance is much better although the GT TDI is no slug. I kept the GTI for 15 months and loved every minute of it, I had a MK5 R32 afterwards for 6 months and although overall I preferred the R the GTI was in some ways the better car and more fun to drive. beer

Edit to say they were all manual. I did test drive the R32 in DSG but for me I preferred the manual as the majority of my driving is for fun and I dont spend too much time in heavy traffic. There are lots of good reviews on DSG though and if it suits your needs I think it is a good thing to have.

Ive driven both , I jumped out of a 2.0 gttdi into a gti and thought the turbo had been disconected, gti gets better when you rev it though ,personally preferred the drive of the tdi never seems to be out he power band plenty of grunt ..

+ only one of them does 60 mpg on a run..

I found the power delivery on the GTI very good without any turbo lag. I guess it is subjective and we all like different things, the best thing to do is do a back to back test on each model. There is the 170 BHP TDI now which I would imagine is a lot closer to the GTI in terms of performance although I have not driven it. I think you would be lucky to get 60mpg on the TDI though, the average is more likely to be 40-45 from my experience.

Have had 5 2.0 gttdis for swmbo now , If i use her car on a 300 mile round trip it will see typically 58mpg driving steady on motorways.. round the doors It usually gets hi 40s.. booting it , it will drop to 40..

must admit I liked the trim in the Gti and the looks etc but weighing up the performance+ drivability against economy I personally stick with the derv...

Havent had a 170 tdi yet but read some good reports on them , they are supposed to be much swifter.. had two of the 140s remapped and they flew.. may not be as quick as a gti in a straight line but they do feel like they are with the torque..

Tried out a GT Tdi briefly this afternoon.

Really impressive performance and quite surprised just how solid it felt.

Very tempted if I can find one with a decent spec.

You need all the toys in it inc.leather. I specced one up a couple of years back.

Great machine and would certainly get another.

Found an ex-demo one in black, with black leather and loads of other stuff.

Just ordered it and hope to get delivery early this week.

Went for the GT Tdi with DSG, paddle shift.

Ta for your help....

They've just phoned me to say they're taking it to my home for me now!

Just in time for the snow.....
