Does anyone here with an S4 saloon or RS4 experience a rattling from the rear doors when going over high frequency bumps? I noticed it yesterday on a trip to Suffolk. Sounded like a rattling window?

It's unlikely that the would rattle in the 'up' position; there is adequate felt / rubber together with the regulator supporting it for the glass to rattle. Has the window been changed, or the framework been removed / repaired at any stage?

Its a new car so No to all of those. I am blaming the glass but don't honestly think it is the glass for the reasosn you've given.

Perhaps try with the window(s) down? If you haven't already, that is.

Next step would be to remove the door card and see if there's anything obvious, eg, there are a couple of cables that run across the cassette frame, or maybe even a slightly loose bolt / screw...

Keep us posted.

Paul.

edited to add: Try seating someone next to the rattling door and apply outwardly pressure to the glass as you go over the bumps?

Might be shell flexing and the door is creaking on the rubbers , try a light smearing of vasaline round the door seal.

Thanks Paul. I will let you know. Audi are going to look at it next week and I'll point them to those solutions. Another guy on RS246 has the same problems but no solution

Could be but it is definitely a rattle rather than a creak if you see what I mean?

dennis thats exactly what I'm doing but I have no faith in Stealers and their ability to diagnose problems. So if I have an idea what it is then I can point them in the right direction.

Understandable sentiments.

From your profile I see that you're London based, there are a trio of ex VW and Audi technicians in Slough who have set up on their own and are in their second year of trading; very knowledgable and totally honest guys. If all else fails perhaps give them a call to see if they have any ideas...

They go by the name of A.V.I.T [Audi Volkswagen Independent Technicians] and you can get them on 01753 532 900.

Just spoken to them this morning. They do not undertake warranty work for Audi, esp seeing that Audi don't release tech data for the RS range. They'll certainly try and locate the problem for you but getting Audi to pick up the bill may prove to be a problem. As for servicing, they do use genuine parts and approved consumables so that side of it should work in your favour as they are considerably cheaper.

Well if the Audi guys can't find the problem I'll drop you a line and see if they can sort it out.
Tks

Hi Mikey,

Funnily enough, I am about to phone my dealer about a rattle that appears to be coming from the rear driver's side door on my one month old RS4 Avant.

In my case, the rattle is a bit more like a clonky rattle, almost as if the door is not seated properly on its' stops, or there is a loose cable inside the door.

Not very impressive for a 30-day old car. I had less problems on my old S4 - Wonder if any soundproofing is deleted on RS4s??

Let me know how you get on...

James

got mine back yesterday but haven't had a chance to see if they've fixed the problem. It seems they re-greased all the seals and internals and if that doesn't work they'll replace the seals around the actual window.
I am not impressed really. 50k car just shouldn't do this, especially when the ride would suggest its not being rattled any more than its S4 sibling.

Drove it on the weekend. Rattle is back. Really badly! sounds like no cross bracing on a badly engineered convertible.
