Quite possibly a stupid question, but does an '85 Golf gti have a carb?

The reason I ask is that the girlfriend's car has gone in for a service, and their idea of how to fix a lumpy idle is to clean the carb - but I thought that all GTi's were injected, and so didn't have a carb?

Having said that, they're also trying to charge £350 to fit a new clutch.....

Sounds like they're talking through their r's.

This doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever? (unless I really am missing something unusual).

The "i" in GTi means injection

otherwise it would be a GTc

An 85 could be a K-Jetronic injection system? A mechanically controlled injection which has an air flow thingy (technical term) that can need adjusting and/or cleaning. It isn't a carb though.

Of course I could be totally wrong, but that is what I remember from my 81.

OK thanks guys, that's what I thought but just wanted to check.

I've been quoted £170 to have a replacement clutch fitted, but then that jumped to £270 when I said it was a convertible - this is Mr Clutch going by their system - does this sound right???

yes They had a mass airflow meter and I think it uses KE Jetronic. I could be wrong though.

More confusion in that an '85 Golf Gti would surely be a Mk 2 car.

Was round the time of the change. It'll be a very late Mk1 (one of the last) on a 'B' plate I suspect.

Nope, ragtops were amde through until 92 fella.

Clean the ISV out with petrol, that's usually all it is.

Nno that's wrong! The engine and gearbox are identical on the two cars! £170 sounds about right. £70 ish for the clutch kit and £100 for labour.

PS your car has Bosch K Jetronic fuel injection. The Golfs ran with this to approx 1987. The Scirocco went until 1991 with it.

Give The Phirm a call - they're VW specialists and come highly recommended. Do lots of projects/mag features and really know their stuff. One garage said I needed a new gearbox, took it trhere and they diagnosed front wheel bearings, supplied and fitted for £200inc VAT They're just south of Farnham on the A3 (takes me 1h 15 to get there but worth the trip!)

If we must be pedantic rolleyes Earlist mk2's in the UK were 1984 on an A plate.....In 1986 a mate had an early red one on an "A" I had a black '85 on a "C" plate.
Again I assumed we were talking hayches not cabs.

Are you sure its a GTI and not a GL with a GTI badge on it ?
85 Cab GTI should have an MFA computer in the centre of the dash/binnacle.
Looks like a clock whose functions can be adjusted by pushing a small button on the end of the right hand stalk [wipers]The GL's never had one. GL's had a carb.
