I was thinking of getting either one of these cars and wonder if there's any real difference? Are there any future costs that will be different because of the badges, will the resale differ?? Or is it just down to looks and thats all.
Cheers Andy

Ran a 1.8T A3 for a while. Mechanically they are pretty similar, with no major differences.
With regards to costs, it really depends on the age and options of the car I guess. For example replacing an Audi climate control unit is not cheap, but then I would bet that a VW unit wouldn't be cheap either.
Servicing on the Audi might be slightly more at the stealers, but a VAG specialist should charge the same for both.
Also, insurance tends to be more on the Audi than the Dub.
Audi will cost more, but hold more of its value.

Hope that helps - I'd go for for Audi myself!

Cheers

Hi, I ran an A3 1.8T Quattro myself, its all down to your specific taste really however as has been said the Audi is a better car for handling and looks, smoother/better to drive and the p/w ratio is better (180bhp) just about, you have the option for a Quattro in the A3 which makes the car a real drivers car...costwise there's prob not too much in it however I think the A3 sells better, its rarer than the Mk4 and you'll find more cars with Leather than the Golf T.
Whatever you buy, look for the cambelt change history at around 75k, and watch out for Turbo seal leaks on both cars which will show up as blue smoke just off idle which I'm sure you know about...cheers.

I was in the same dilema a few years back and went with the A3, it was far better in looks and rarity than the golf imho. After having several cars since i've gone back to audi but an S3, the two are totally different cars. If your budget will not stretch to the S3 then I would agree with the comments about the 1.8t quattro a3. you should not have to pay too much of a premium over the normal 1.8t but get quite a bit more for your money.

How about the octavia VRS ? They're bigger, cheaper to buy and insure and have more power as standard from the 1.8T.

I ran a Golf 1.8T for a while a few years ago and it was a great car. That said there weren't any A3's around at the time. Given the choice I would go A3 nicer looking and good resale
