I’m looking to buy an Audi Allroad in the near future, probably an automatic TDi version.

Please can someone explain how the suspension works, so that I can test it works properly, and also let me know of anything else specific that I should look out for with this model.

Not that I can help with the technical question, but is it the current AllRoad or the previous one?

I was loaned a current AllRoad by Audi recently and it appeared to be an A6 Avant with higher suspension settings, everything else seem to be standard A6, whereas the previous AllRoad seemed to be more bespoke?

I like them but cant really see the point?

I tried the TDi tiptronic auto and found it lethargic in the extreme, and so bought the six speed manual 180bhp model, chipped to 220bhp. Prefer to drive my 100S4 though - much faster and smoother.

It's a handy maid of all work. The new Allroad is as someone has pointed out just an A6 with the variable ride height. The original AllRoad (can we call them ur-AllRoads yet?) was beefed up structurally. Presumably now they have the Q7 or what ever its called Audi didn't want two off-roaders in the line up.

Ref the suspension you have four settings: 1 Lowest "sport" setting. 2 The usual one. 3 Higher, when you hit some rough stuff. 4 Highest, right up, never needed to use it yet. You just push the "+" and "-" buttons and go up and down. Quite easy.

They are good off-road, except for length and width.

The highest setting (4) will only work up until approx 20mph any faster and the car should automatically lower to 3. It will then automatically drop to 2 at approx 60mph.

I had a 2.5Tdi 180 Special Edition one for just over a year and loved it.

I sold one (old shape) back to a main Audi dealer on behalf of a friend who had emigrated.

Whilst the buyer was inspecting I asked him about any weak points and he said that the main things to watch for are poor performing/failing tiptronic box's and failed air suspension bladders.

Both are not cheap to remedy.
