Evening chaps, having whittled down an enormous list of cars with my wife for our new "Familywagen" I have landed on the one I least expected - the VW Touareg V10. I'm afraid I know very little about them, and having been into two VW dealers today, neither could provide a glossy brochure, nor and real info on spec differences between models years.

I have seen both 2003 and 2004 models with around 20-30k on the clock for reasonable money, and was trying to establish the differences between them (if any) or anything I should look out for. Perhaps you could help (or point me in the right direction!)

From what I have gathered, both have:
12-way adjustable heated seats
Big V10 with auto
Sat/nav with a square (7 inch?) screen
Button for phone (normal or option?)
Plastic boot liners
Big 5 spoke alloys (was getting dark by this point so didn't have time to check sizes)

One however (the 03 but lower mileage one) had flappy paddles and heated rear seats.

So what else should I be checking for, and what are they like to run? I would have thought it'd be more economical than our current 4.4 X5 V8, but with five litres worth of capacity, probably not as efficient as the 2.5 (but then that would be slower...) and is there anything I should know?!

Many thanks for all your help.

Drove one a couple of years ago, great car and quick expect 23-25mpg, they have plenty of electrical goodies and I believe 2 batteries.
If 2nd hand you need a good warrentee , new ones have discounts of £6K on them so, this will effect residues

I have a 3.2V6, great car, from what I have been told by others is that the 3.0 V6 Tdi is the better allrounder, alhough if you are after all out performance the V10 is the one to go for. I would drive a V6Tdi and V10Tdi back to back as I have been told the big 5ltr engine is very heavy so affects the handling considerably.

Also try www.mytouareg.co.uk/ lots of info on there.

Was snooping round a VW dealer on Friday and they said the same thing. 3.0L tdi is the way to go unless you MUST have the big engine

Also sat in a Merc ML 6.3 AMG thingy on Friday. WOW! yikes

Lovely S there Mike.... fabulous condition!

Great Cerbera too Nick, I do miss my old one!

Right, looks like the proof is in the driving. I had figured that coming from the V8 X5 and having been thoroughly underwhelmed by the diesel X5s that the V10 TDi would give me the best of both worlds. In terms of ultimate handling, I'm not too worried as it'll mostly be for family outings and for wifey to drive, plus I have the TVR for when I want a real blast... Still, it is a point to consider being as the engine is that much heavier. Looks like I need to go drive a few.

Have an ‘03 V10.

Really like it. I test drove a KN S and although it had sharper handling than the VW, it felt comparatively poorly built and a bit cheap, plus they generally have lower spec than the VW (since the V10 has so such stuff as standard).

I find with mine unless you are going really mad with cornering speeds (+ aggressive throttle) the VW holds things together well.

Get 21-22 av during mixed driving, and 24-26 mpg on a longer run.

Try them both I guess

Ultimate (bar build quality) must be the KN turbo if you can live with the bonkers mpg sonar

It's a bit dull on here compared to the other place, you started a real fight over there without even memtioning the "C" word in the question!!!.
Only 5 posts here yesterday, almost as bad a the Aston board.

I'll get my coat.......

Stick with Touareg because it's more practical than the Porsche.

Great powerful engine, high and low ration gearboxes etc but get the adjustable air suspension if not standard.

I've got the 2.5 Tdi SE sport but drove the V10 on a VW day at Oulton Park and off-road.

It is a brilliant car and you get an awful lot for your money.

Sadly, all Touaregs depreciate quite heavily.

I think it depends what you want from the car, but the 3.0TDI is a great engine, we run remapped 3.0's at work which have plenty of power and do actually get 30MPG. The remap really does help though.

The V10 is very smooth and easy to drive. Again a remap makes a big difference. With one it'll spin the wheels in 3rd "Hi"!

Go steady with all the re-map stuff.

I looked into having a Cargraphic or MTM chip in mine, and the word came back that V10's doing lots of miles have blown torque converters a while after the rechip. The stock 750 NM at 2k revs is mad enough, but 800 - 850NM plus post re-map is an insane amount of torque to put through the drive train.

Thank you for all the advice chaps, interesting reading. Unfortunately having driven a couple now, I don't think the Toerag is for us, and we'll be looking more closely at the Porsche and Range Rover.

Much appreciated!
