haha. If you have to ask how to do any bulb i think you should take it to the dealers.

2@

I wouldn't be surprised if some amount of disassembly is required, judging by other VAG products.

Haha . . . . child.
Read the post, he's asking if there is a knack to it.

To the original poster, get a mirror and see what the innards of the light look like.
IIRC I needed to remove the dipped beam bulbs to get soem room to work in.
Get some plasters for skinned knuckles though, unless you have hands like a child (perhaps 00161wj can help !)

perhaps you should change it for him then - no? thought not

there are quite a few cars on the road now requiring the removable of bumpers and all kinds of stripping not previously necessary on older cars to do this kind of routine maintenance - have you got the owners handbook with the car? if not I'll have a look at one for you and find out

I found it easier to remove the bumper to do it - otherwise you could be there all day!

no unfortunately I don't have a manual.... if you get a chance to have a look that would be great.

thanks for your help everyone, I'll give it another go. Luckily I do have small hands being female!

Handbook says refer to a dealer.
Pretty much the best Mk4 resource is here . .

www.ukmkivs.net

Do a search, plenty of info on this topic.

Well. I did mine easy enough. But thats on a 1.4.
Hardest ive dones on a new A8. Had to remove the wheel and go in through the wheel arch. But stil figured that out. I'm just saying that hes best off taking it to the dealer if he cant figure out what to take off. All you have to do is look at things.

Ask someone who lives nearby and knows a bit about cars?

Remove the front bumper then remove the headlight unit. Takes about 40 mins to do both sides once you have found all the torx screws and clips.

I have managed to change the nearside dipped bulb by loosening the battery and shifting it over but for the others bumper removeal is the only sensible way.

When mine needed doing I bottled it at taking bumpers off and all that hassle so bought the bulbs from Halfords and took advantage of their offer to fit them for £2.99 or something like that, it took 2 of their slimmist wristed employees a good half an hour to fit both side light bulbs while I had a coffee.

Bugger leaving them alone with your car! Trained chimps would be a compliment to most up here laugh

This topic has been great, I always wondered why my car came with a new headlight bulb on one side but the old one on tother when the bloke had bought a set. Now I know!

If you have an A3 you can do them easily without taking anything more off than the access panel on the back of the light.

Same trouble for me too. As mentioned before MKIVS is a good source of information. I followed the FAQ’s (http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/425656/Sho ) which led to a user guide on how to remove the bumper etc (http://home.nycap.rr.com/brandonc/hea )

It’s a fairly easy job, only take about 10 minutes to remove. You may need an extra person to help line the bumper up when re assembling though.

Thanks
Jamie
