Pinking sound on a Golf V5

Has anyone got any ideas of have experienceced pinking noises from a V5 engine under load at around 2000rpm in all gears? also the fault seems to manifest itself in lumpy pull aways in 1st gear where the engine revs drop and it feels like it mat stall? please help.

My friend found that using crappy fuel (i.e. Supermarket 95 ron fuel) made his V5 Bora pink under load. Using Tesco 99 ron did clear it up or failing that using BP ultima did too.

Edited to Add - What is your MPG like? Perhaps you should take a look at the lamda probe and see when it was last changed. These dont cost a fortune and only make things better once you replace them.
